The difference between Portslade Health Centre and my previous practice is huge - no doubt partially due to staffing issues (and I don't dismiss that), but PHC have clearly made huge efforts to make their service easy to access and as efficient as possible. The online portal and phone consultations introduced during the pandemic have been fantastic improvements and really do make it easier for busy working people to be flexible around overstretched NHS resources. Every member of the team I have encountered (2 GPs, nurse, receptionists, and vaccination volunteers) have been friendly, professional and supportive. The practice feels clean and calm, and all appointments have taken place on-time. As a 'plus size' person I've never felt stigmatised or had unrelated symptoms brushed off as being down to my weight, which had reached a point previously of stopping me going to the GP - and when I was unwell just before Christmas, I was never made to feel like I was being 'difficult' - I was looked after and referred quickly for treatment. Finally, mental health concerns have been treated as respectfully and sensitively as any other issue. I cannot recommend this practice enough!

I called to ask to see a nurse as I had caught my arm and cut it and was told nurses don’t deal with cuts which I have been a few times for cuts before so I was told to go to a and e which cost me £23 when I live 10 minutes from the health center I don’t think at my age of 87 years should be treated this way

Over the years the receptionists have had more and more to do in that they now give the impression "they are the Doctors" ! It is their requirement to book an appointment and ask a brief reason why, NOT to offer advice of any kind. Furthermore the system of booking an appointment can be made easier with online booking available to all and staff using the "online allocated" spaces instead of making people wait extended periods. Given there are Six Doctors at the practice, perhaps they could better utilise their time by having 3 in morning, 2 in the afternoon with 1 roaming doctor making outside calls on a daily basis to those only who genuinely cannot get to the surgery not to make "general" house calls. This Doctor could do say 10 - 7pm and Saturday 9-1pm on a 1 in 6 week rota basis. I put this idea forward not knowing what exactly Doctors are contracted to do however, should any of the Doctors undertake "other work at other practices" this needs to be addressed in favour of their "main " centre.

The practice personnel can only help if you are prepared to give out information relative to your problem. I have found that if you offer information to allow the staff to offer a suitable appointment i.e. if you say why you think you have an emergency, they will do their best. I have found that GPs and nurses phone back and secretaries and receptionists are most helpful. Nurse Marion helped so much with my support stockings which were made for me by a local hospital. I now have stockings I can get on! If I have a problem and disagree with whatever suggestion is made there is always a way to agree a solution. My husband and I are so pleased that we moved to this practice in March 2016 as we have found all GPs are very positive and welcoming which is very important and emergencies have been dealt with sympathetically and efficiently with great outcomes. .
