I was treated for a detached retina by Miss Kathrin Heike Greiner and her surgical team in Aberdeen, and I felt that she gave excellent care. She successfully repaired my retina with a single vitrectomy surgery, leaving vision identical to the way it was before the detachment happened. I was a challenging case because I have small pupils as a result of having had my intraocular lenses removed in infancy. This makes examining my eyes difficult, both in the clinic and during surgery. Under these circumstances, losing no vision to the detachment was an outstanding outcome and is a testament to Miss Greiner's skill. She is kind and considerate during appointments, and you can tell she cares about patients as human beings and not just as surgical problems to be fixed, and is willing to go the extra mile if they are ever in difficulties. When I was facing problems with the follow-up appointments system, she took time out of her schedule to phone me in order to get the problem straightened out, and then squeezed me into a full clinic at short notice in order to check ongoing symptoms. None of us want to face eye troubles, and the experience of a retinal detachment and the worries caused by it will always be distressing even in the most brilliant of success stories. But you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone much more surgically skilled, more on-the-ball or more empathic and caring towards patients than MIss Greiner if you are ever faced with this sight-threatening situation.
