After 10 years crippled by chronic pain, he diagnosed the problem within 5 minutes; a condition I had guessed at myself for years but which no other pain clinic would take seriously. Unfortunately it was too late to cure it but he oversaw pain relief for many years. An incredible doctor with a far better knowledge of spinal structure and problems than any other consultant I saw in all those years. I miss him more than anyone can imagine.

Winston de Mello. Great Doctor. Listens to me and explains in great detail my situation, what treatment he feels best suited to my problem. During a number of session I was totally comfortable because I trusted Winston completely. Now that he has retired from the NHS in Manchester he will be greatly missed by staff and patients. I wish him well in his retirement. Ron Buck

I want to add my upset at hearing that Dr De Mello has retired. I had a pain management nurse telephone appointment today when I was told of his retirement. You couldn't wish for a more genuine, sympathetic and capable Dr. I didn't need any injections ,thank goodness, but I did need his understanding, specialist advice and support. He was a joy to meet and I wish him well in his retirement. Susan Brook

Devastated to learn today that Winston de Mello has retired. I was in a very bad place when I first met him many years ago. He was inspirational and he put me on the path to wellness. Although I will never be totally recovered his physical interventions coupled with strategies for coping have been a life saver to me. He never failed to listen and to ask about my husband who has multiple health issues. What a guy. I will miss him. It sounds odd but the way he worked made it a pleasure going seeing him. B. I have a yearly impar ganglion block with Dr De Mello and he's the best thing that has happened to me. I spent 18 months at home and lost my sense of self during that time as I couldn't focus on anything other than the pain. The lead up to seeing Dr De Mello I had numerous tests and appointments trying to figure out where and why there was so much pain. My first appointment he suggested trying the pain injection and seeing if it made a difference as still we weren't sure why there was pain. He arranged a second consultation immediatley so we could check the effectiveness of the injection. After the first injection I ran for the first time and remember crying with how happy I felt that there was no pain in two years. The pain came back within 3 months and I had to repeat the injection but Dr De Mello reassured me that the second injection will be effective for longer and since then I've seen him yearly. He was absolutely great, remembered me at each appointment (difficult when you have so many patients), listened to my symptoms and discussed options, made me feel at ease during the injections, reassured me that we'll work out the problem and find a solution. What an absolute gem. I've recently found out that he has retired and am sorry that the NHS has lost an absolutely brilliant doctor. I am very happy for him so that he can dedicate time to himself and his own life. He's helped so many people and I really hope he realises how valued he is by all those that he has helped.

I have just found out that Winston de Mello has retired from UHSM. This represents a sad loss to the hospital and to his many patients. I wish him well in his retirement and hope he can now enjoy time and good health for himself. Ps it is very distressing that I have not reviewed and communication from UHSM informing me of Dr de Mellos’ retirement and what is to happen to his patient list.

One star rating is really too high for this consultant. He’s purely ONLY interested in PN and shows absolutely zero skill in anything other. Dr DeMello doesn’t display or follow through any patients requirements instead leaving in intensive pain they frequently are admitted into hospital.

Highly intimidating and made to feel guilty for attending. Failed to correctly record or diagnosis findings, did not take time to listen accurately to symptoms and appreciate the difficulties these do cause.

There is no truer saying as your health is your wealth. I having been living with an uncomfortable pain around my coccyx area for over six years and have been a patient under Dr D. My daughter realised how unhappy the pain was making me and how much my personality had changed because of this and because she was a doctor herself would not give up in finding the best possible doctor for me after lots of research we found Dr D and realised just why he is really a jewel in the crown. He displayed empathy and genuine concern during consultations and feed back and made me feel he understood the the pain I was in and how he could help me manage it . I had a ganglion impar injection in March 2020 just before the lockdown for corona virus came in force . For this I will always be eternally grateful as it has allowed me to be able to stay active during the period and relieved most of my pain I think had it not been for his intervention this period of time would have been unbearable for me . We don’t know when things will get back to normal but I know if I am privileged enough to go back as soon as they do I will be one of the first of his many patients to request an appointment to see him. An exceptional Doctor . I do hope he is keeping well and safe during this period. What an outstanding NHS we have .
