Dr Kampers was recommended to me and until I spoke to him I felt I had no chance of returning to the calm, clear-headed, smiling, happy person I was before COVID hit. I think I always was a bit OCD, but COVID made me panic about any germs, contamination.... not for myself but for my family and anyone else I came into contact me. I luckily haven’t had COVID but just in case I did have it! I couldn’t think clearly and I dreaded getting out of bed each day... not like me at all. Dr Kampers knew instantly which medication would suit me and the correct dosage. Within a week of my first appointment, I was so much calmer and the psychology sessions started to get through to me. I wasn’t in the right state of mind beforehand. As the weeks passed, I became less fearful, less anxious and I could sleep again. I am now six months down the line, just starting to be weaned off my tablets, under careful guidance of Dr Kampers. His positivity and confidence meant I trusted him right from the beginning and he was right.

Dr Kampers is an outstanding doctor. When I was first referred to a psychiatrist, I actually chose another doctor - Dr Kampers is an demonstrably impressive man; he’s successful, takes care of himself and exudes positivity - things that at my lowest point I didn’t want to encounter. How wrong I was to make such assumptions. He was immediately disarming, put me at ease and let me talk. He really, really listened to me. He wanted to admit me as an inpatient initially, but it wasn’t what I wanted. He’d acknowledged I’d been sober before - because he’d been listening - and trusted that if I said I’d commit to sobriety, that I would. He said he wouldn’t treat me unless I’d show commitment to it - I tapered off (following his advice) and saw him 4 weeks later. I wasn't well, but I’d achieved sobriety. We spoke some more. He wanted a period of complete sobriety, so we had a deal. His closing statement to me “I promise you, you follow our plan, and I will make you feel better. Your life will improve.” - it was a bold statement, but I believed every word. He was so certain. Without me saying it directly, he knew that my self-image was important to me - he also knew SSRIs hadn’t worked. He prescribed Bupropion - promised no weight gain and would just help lift my mood. Within 6 months I was a different person - I was me, nothing had really changed - I was just feeling better. My depression and anxiety scores had decreased by over half, I’d got a new job, had a healthy relationship and was ready to start the final phase. Personal circumstances prevented me completing my treatment, truth be told, but I’m absolutely certain if I’d have finished our programme - I would never use the word cured - but I’d have had all the tools needed to navigate the world. He checked up on me, of course, and 2 years later while I need help again, he took the time to respond to me - and due to circumstances based on Covid and location, I won’t be able to see him this time round. But he kindly sent me all my files and I know that equipped with his insights, my next psychiatrist will be able to carry through his plan. He’s not just a personable man and an expert in his field, he is someone that anyone with a major depressive disorder, panic and anxiety disorder and a severe alcohol misuse disorder would be more than lucky to see. By far the best doctor I’ve ever met. Put simply, I speak of him often.

I can't recommend Dr Kampers more highly. I saw him for anxiety, which was quite frankly ruining my life....I was waking in the night, obsessing all day and pretty much all I was doing was having crazy anxious thought that I couldn't control. Dr Kampers helped me get back to normal and very quickly. I was very worried about taking any medication and he was VERY reassuring throughout and also recommended new non medical treatments too. He was a great listener and then when he's finishes listening to everything, he was so positive in how he's going to get me better, explained the plan so well that I just feel a huge burden lifted. I never usually bother writing reviews but I definitely owe Dr Kampers for helping me!

Dr Kampers has been my physician for several years. My condition has improved considerably under his care. He has listened to my issues and given guidance on the way forward. The most encouragement came from my concentration on the present moment, which I do for an hour every morning. I have continued on this path for the best part of a year, leading me to feel (and appear) a better, calmer, person. Dr Kampers has also helped on a number of seperate occasions with other issues that arose in my life.

I cannot recommend Dr. Kampers highly enough. He is an excellent listener but also very perceptive, and extremely knowledgeable in his field. Consulting him about severe clinical depression, he had a very open-minded approach and helped me tackle not only said depression but also underlying conditions that had been misdiagnosed or ignored in the past (notably CPTSD). Building on our exchanges (medical history, professional situation, personal preferences), he devised a different kind of treatment that completely changed my life for the better. The fact that he didn't start by prescribing drugs was a major plus in my books. We successfully explored other venues than talking therapy (as they had been of limited benefit to me in the past), for which he convinced other specialists of the validity of his protocol (and how right did he prove to be!). The improvement in my quality of life has been so dramatic that I would encourage other people to be followed by Dr. Kampers and look into these other venues would they apply to their situation. I could only hope they reap the same rewards as I, by these means or any others that Dr. Kampers would set for them.

  • Genetics
  • Pain medicine

Profile

Earlier in my career as the medical director of a busy GP practice in Canada, I was often frustrated by the limitations of addressing mental health issues in ten-minute consultations. I wanted more time to listen to my patients, hear their stories, ask questions, and understand the context in which their symptoms arose before diagnosis and treatment. And thus began my journey to the UK, and into psychiatry.

I have been practising medicine for over 35 years, and as an Integrative Consultant Psychiatrist for over 25 years.

I am a highly specialised and experienced doctor with a broad range of expertise and clinical skills in General Practice, General Adult and Elderly Care Psychiatry.

I have always had a curious and inquisitive mindset, especially about what I consider to be the blind spots in Western Medicine, specifically:
• Undiagnosed and untreated ADHD
• Medically unexplained symptoms and chronic pain and the inadequate and often myopic approach to these areas of medicine, where patients are most frequently subjected to medical gaslighting.
• Female hormonal mental health issues.
I recognise that precision medicine using genetic testing as a blueprint and platform facilitates the optimal functional medicine approach and that the future of psychiatry is inextricably linked to psychedelics and best combined with psychedelic and integration assisted therapy.

I believe mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing are all equally important, and go hand in hand.

My approach as an Integrative Consultant Psychiatrist focuses on mind-body-spirit optimisation, and I assess individuals as a whole and in context.

I am a mind-body and trauma informed expert clinician, who uses a biopsychosocial and evidence-based approach to chronic primary pain, chronic functional syndromes, and medically unexplained symptoms.

I use a diagnostic hierarchy approach, which implies that certain diagnoses should not be made when others are present. My approach contrasts with the traditional DSM and ICD based approach of making multiple diagnoses at the same time which can lend itself to the problems of comorbidity and polypharmacy.

The core aspect of my approach to clinical psychopharmacology is the importance of recognising and tackling this comorbidity problem, thereby avoiding all diagnoses are created equal approach, which often leads to unnecessary treatments.

My special interests are:
• Chronic Primary Pain (neuroplastic pain) and Mindbody Medicine (Psychophysiologic Disorders)
• Undiagnosed and untreated ADHD and ADD
• Female Hormonal Mental Health
• Psychedelic Assisted Therapy and
• The role of Cannabis Based Medicinal Products in Mental Health.
I am a member of the Psychophysiologic Disorders Association listed in their Directory Practitioner Directory

I am the only UK based Medical Doctor (Physician) and Consultant Psychiatrist skilled in the diagnostic assessment and treatment of these conditions and all associated comorbid mental health conditions.

I am a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), the World Institute of Pain and The British Pain Society.

I have recovered from neuroplastic pain myself and developed The Pain Recovery Program

I also have a residential Pain Recovery Program which is based in South Africa near the Kruger National Park
White River Manor Pain Recovery Program

I am a member of Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies and a certified Ketamine Assisted Therapist.

I am the Consultant lead for 2 Intravenous Ketamine Assisted Therapy Clinics in London and also offer Ketamine Assisted Therapy using oral Ketamine Lozenges.

I recognise that MDMA and Psilocybin assisted therapy can help heal psychological disorders and trauma and will incorporate these and all other psychedelics as soon as I can legally prescribe them which will then facilitate evidence based micro dosing.

I am a member of the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society and the Medicinal Institute of Education and have had expert medical cannabis training specifically for UK doctors.

I am registered with Script Assist which enables independent practitioners to prescribe medical cannabis in their existing clinics and is subjected to Streamlined Clinical Governance Data Lead Formulary and involves Doctor/ Patient Goal Setting.

I am the only Consultant Psychiatrist in the UK that offers any and all of these programs.

I consider myself to be one of the most forward and lateral thinking psychiatrists in the UK and my approach values integrity, perseverance, and curiosity.

I integrate traditional medical and psychiatric approaches and work closely with complementary healthcare practitioners registered with the Complimentary & Natural Healthcare Council and trauma informed expert coaches, working closely with Trauma Informed Coaches.

Thanks to a progressive career spanning three continents, patients can be assured of an approach that is international in outlook and sensitive to different cultures, expectations, and norms.
