Simon Smith - Parathyroidectomy I wish there was more words that can describe how this man has changed my life! I knew it was bad but I had no idea how bad until after the operation and even things that I hadn’t even attributed to this disease improved. The first thing I noticed upon waking was the bone pain that I had felt in my hips, feet, stomach and back was gone, like completely gone!! It actually made me feel unsteady on my feet I was so used to holding myself a certain way so that I could be more comfortable that I had forgotten what it was like to actually stand up straight! The next thing was the brain fog I was used to asking myself the same questions 20 times to ensure I remembered what I was going to say or do next! I was actually having several linear thoughts without any repeating!! I cannot tell you with my words what this felt like! I have compiled a list of just some of the things I have noted an improvement in: The things I’ve noticed that have improved 1. Sleeping 2. Bone pain 3. Migraines 4. Sweating 5. Intense Exhaustion 6. Nausea 7. Mood 8. Depression 9. Despair 10. Frequent urination especially during the night. 11. Stomach pain 12. Back pain 13. Cognitive thinking 14. Procrastinating 15. Been able to walk again without pain 16. Brain fog 17. Constant thirst 18. Daily Headaches I would just like to state that my calcium was considered high normal at 2.6 - 2.7 and the decision to operate was kindly given to me by Mr Smith, he stated he couldn’t guarantee an improvement in my symptoms but I could tell by his caring eyes and gentle voice that he believed in me when I told him that I was ready and I wanted this operation! Having a doctor that believes in you and listens to you like Mr Smith, made all the difference to me! He could have sent me away and told me to wait for my calcium to rise higher but he didn’t he listened and he cared and he believed in me, the patient, that there was something wrong and that he could fix it. Not only all of the above he gave me the prettiest scar I could have wished for! As I was being put to sleep I said “please Mr Smith give me a pretty scar” and he said “I only do pretty scars” and this is the last thing I heard before I was put under! He also tested my calcium and PTH while I was on the table and this meant that he could see my levels improving and therefore know that the surgery was a success before closing me up! He truly is the kindest most genuine doctor and surgeon with hands blessed by the gods!! I wouldn’t go anywhere else for my surgical needs!!

I recently had a Parathyroidectomy at Broomfield hospital Mr, Simon Smith was my surgeon. From the first meeting I found him to be a polite, friendly person who listened to my concerns and needs. I would say the best surgeon I have met and there have been a few over the years. On the day of the operation Mr.Smith was the same explaining all I wanted and needed to know very clearly and in language I could understand. In fact all the team on that ward were lovely people. It put me at ease and although no-one likes to go into hospital the whole day was much more pleasant due to the care shown by Mr.Smith and team.Dr. Jones the Anaesthetist was also a very pleasant man and had a joke calling the anaesthetic Gin and Tonic which made most patients laugh and therefore made us feel more relaxed before theatre.
