Profile

Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist Lucy Cowans qualified as a chartered Physiotherapist in 2000. After working in London for 4 years in a variety of settings she relocated to the Isle of Wight. Whilst in London she was particularly drawn to musculoskeletal injuries, and interested in the wide range of responses that patients could have to injuries and treatments. This stimulated an interest in the field of pain and since 2006 she has specialised in the treatment of chronic pain in adults. Lucy works with patients individually or as part of a multidisciplinary team. She also runs the Isle of Wight Pain Management Programme which helps patients with pain to manage and understand their condition. She specialises in the treatment of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), Fibromyalgia, and back pain, using a variety of treatment techniques as appropriate such as manual therapy, exercise prescription, graded motor imagery, acupuncture and cognitive behavioural therapy. Lucy has a post graduate certificate in CBT for long term conditions and is a registered supplementary prescriber. She regularly attends training courses and is completing an MSc in Physiotherapy and Education.

I feel so fortunate to have met Lucy through the Chronic Pain Team at St Mary's. She is one of the best practitioners I have ever come across in my 20+ year medical history. Lucy is warm and caring and always makes you feel heard, which in my experience living with Chronic Pain, should not be taken for granted!! She goes above and beyond to help, looking at you as a whole person rather than just an illness. Taking into account your emotional and mental wellbeing and your lifestyle at home or work. She is so knowledgeable and honest about treatments and medications and how they could improve or affect you, helping you to weigh up the risk vs reward strategy that chronic pain patients seem to have to live by. I've also had acupuncture with Lucy and she did her absolute best to help me get appointments close together so the outcome of the treatment would be most beneficial (& it was very helpful!). Lucy has lots of information regarding life tweaks you can try to improve sleep or pain or general wellbeing which I always find super helpful. Lucy is such an asset to St. Mary's, I'd be lost without her.

By far the best physio I have ever seen. Firstly she knows what CRPS is and knows what to do with it! An actual miracle. She always listens and understands what I'm going through and sets up a plan and treatments that actually help. Will always ask for Lucy

Lucy was extremely professional and knowledgeable, and was happy to answer all my questions/ explained everything thoroughly. She made me feel comfortable and cared for. I've tried many other treatments and physiotherapists/specialists, but have seen the most progress and improvement in my symptoms throughout and since our sessions. Thank you for all your help!

i suffer with C.R.P.S. Lucy understood my condition and the fact she knew what a spinal cord stimulator was !!! in the last year I've been to 3 different physio's each one didn't understand my condition or my stimulator finally i met Lucy today it was refreshing to see progress and a regime in place to help me get back to some sort of normality ,( at last ) . would recommend anyone with a long term pain condition to see her

I can say in all honesty that Lucy has changed my perception of the power of physiotherapy can help in pain management, as a Fibromyalgia patient at the pain clinic, I have been most concerned over the weakness in my legs & ability to walk aswell as deal with the all over body pain, I went in with big hopes & Lucy listened to my wants, needs & goals & has engineered a plan that is not only helping bring my legs back to life, but is helping desensitise my pain levels in order for her to manipulate other areas of my body ready for the physio that may lay ahead. I am so very lucky to be in her care, when we are at our lowest & in pain it is hard to see a life more manageable, but Lucy listens & actually cares alot about being able to help me get that life in anyway she can. An amazing asset to the the pain clinic team!
