Share review of York Hospital
The consultant and nursing staff were excellent. I was shocked at how overworked the staff were and how understaffed the ward was. No wonder the NHS is in crisis. In the end my treatment was excellent and I can't complain but the lack of information and time spent waiting was of concern. The ward was scruffy and the shower facilities were like a 70s Butlins.
One aspect troubled me greatly. When the permanent staff left on an evening there appeared to be agency staff drafted in. Some of these were young men who frankly shouldn't have been near patients. They spoke openly to each other about how the evening rates were better than the day and they reeked of cigarette smoke. One old man was told to wait until the morning for a cup of tea and another man in his 80s was roughly handled in a bed manoeuvre, crying out until a nurse came along and intervened. Through those nights I frankly did not feel safe.
