I experienced multiple issues at my time at the hospital with the customer services. My husband called multiple times during my surgery and was told by the nurses and multi people to call back in an hour as no information was available. This went on for 4 hours and he was left worried sick that something complicated had happened as i am a high risk patient. He eventually was told i was in recovery and that there were no beds available in the ward - why this was not honestly said on the first call is beyond me. Additionally on the day i was due to come out we spent another 5 hours waiting for a blood test. We were told 30 minutes continuously. One doctors told us we didn't need them so we went to leave to have that doctor chasing us to the lift to get us back for the test. In the end i discharged myself fed up of waiting and getting useless explanations. It was hours later we had a call to tell us the results of the blood tests.

I cannot fault the hopital in general but I would say that I believe the pain management needs to be looked at. I believe that in this day and age no one should be left in pain and I was lucky enough to be on a ward where the very efficient sister worked with the same ethics. Although I was given a good array of pain management medication after major surgery, on two separate occasions I was advised by consultants that I would have a particular medication. These were not particularly medications that I requested. On both reviews I had the 'new medication' once and it was not seen again? I cannot see how this was effective pain a management and gave medication time to work. I did not have a review after with any consultant to revert back to normal medication. I was sent home with one of these medications that I'd been given once. Some nursing staff offer PRN meds regularly but others don't. Working on the assumption that many medical professionals do that regular pain relief enhances the chances of your pain relief working consistently better PRN should be offered so that as a patient you do not feel like you are asking for something you are not entitled to. I was only in 4 days after major surgery with a further medical issue in the same area so pain relief was vital and advised initially by my consultant would be addressed carefully. At times it was but despite PRN being 'as required' I still think nursing staff need to offer at the times it is due. Would have made a big difference to my experience. Funnily enough the excellent ward sister whilst visiting patients in my small ward would look at me and say you're in pain I can see that and I'm not having it. If it can been seen it should be addressed quickly by all staff. I hope this is constructive, as others on my ward felt the same.

My elderly mother was brought into A and E. I arrived to find her in a cubicle completely out of sight of any nursing staff, she is in her 90s, has dementia, is deaf and falls easily. Everyone who dealt with her was very efficient but made little allowance for her frailties - eg talking quickly and a little impatiently and expecting her to hear and understand immediately. I needed help to toilet her, my husband was willing but knew that she would be embarrassed if he came in with us. Nobody was available although the ward was quiet and it was a struggle as she was unwell and unsteady on her feet. I do greatly appreciate the medical care that my mother was given but feel that more empathy was needed towards an elderly, confused patient. On a subsequent visit to another department we found reception staff to be rather uninterested and a little brusque, nursing and medical staff were excellent. I felt almost apologetic to be bothering reception. As a family we are more used to St. Richard's hospital in Chichester and find a more cheerful and friendly atmosphere there when checking in with different departments.

Having attended this hospital as a private patient, I was not too impressed by the room I was allocated and in which I spent eight days. The room was very badly situated next to a very busy noisy work station. I anticipated that this would be a problem for me on my arrival, having previously asked a nurse for a quiet room when I attended my pre-med the previous week. Unfortunately another room was not available so I remained in discomfort for the majority of my time there as Iam sensitive to noise. The bathroom was very badly designed and having collapsed whilst having a shower I could not reach the emergency pull cord which was situated outside of the shower. The shower did not work properly all the time I was there despite being checked by an engineer. The toilet remained blocked for twenty four hours and would not flush properly. all in all my stay as a private patient in this room was not suitable. No problems with my nursing or medical treatment

Standard of care and expertise was excellent. However, information given at the pre-op assessment stage appeared not to be available or was ignored at the time of the operation as much time was taken going over the same ground.

Review of AE (Worthing) written by a patient

I came to A&E after a fall from my horse and despite being in a lot of pain on RH side of my back & on medication for Oesteoporsis the doctor who examined me thought it was probably just muscle tears & said he didn't feel it necessary to X-ray 10 days later & a trip to a chiropractor an X-ray has confirmed a break in my 3rd rib I really am not happy with the treatment from A&E especially as recommended exercise & heat pads are completely opposite to treatment for a broken rib. I do hope this complaint is looked at & mistakes like happen less frequently if at all

Review of Endoscopy written by a patient
1st April 2016

Admitted to Endoscopy unit for a colonoscopy procedure - Staff were excellent on this day ward, explained everything carefully and were very reassuring and helpful. The ward was spotlessly clean and very peaceful. I felt I was cared for as an individual. Thank you very much also to the consultant for referring me so rapidly.
