I had a second hip replacement last August. The Whittington Hospital has an orthopaedic unit which is separated from the rest of the hospital with the aim of reducing the chance of cross-infection and there is a real sense of community spirit.
The care and attention of the staff before, during and after the op was wonderful. In addition to pre-assessment clinics, every patient has to attend a Joint School. In the course of a 1 1/2 hour session the whole process is explained, including possible complications, how best to prepare and what will happen in the follow-up.
Altogether brilliant (I was sent home the day after the op and stopped using crutches within a week).
