Staff were blunt, bordering on unkind. I’d been advised to attend A&E by NHS111 but when I turned up the receptionist behaved as if I was an inconvenience. I had a broken foot but she told me to walk around the building to minor injuries. When I was seen by the nurse there I asked whether I could drive and he wouldn’t give me a clear answer. I asked how I would get home (I live alone and had driven myself in) and he said ‘that’s not for me to say’. I noted that my discharge notes say I was released home/to the care of family. This isn’t true. He knew I was alone and had no idea how I was going to get home. When a different nurse called for the virtual fracture clinic she seemed in a rush to get me off the phone. I still have questions about what I’m able to do and this matters as I live alone. Overall I was left feeling uncared for and unimportant. I’m still worried about whether I am doing the right things to heal my fracture.

Suggested improvements
More empathy. More listening. Offers of help with a chair and porter rather than forcing me to walk around on a broken foot and then - ironically - giving me instructions not to walk or drive at all with no recommendation of alternatives. What do you do with other injured people who drive in but can’t drive home? I felt like a number, not a person.
