As an out patient, I required two procedures, on different days. One required 2 large doses of Moviprep, the other did not. I was told about the procedures verbally, nothing in writing. Which meant I had a whole miserable night of diahorrhea and vomiting. On my way in to the hospital, the nurse called to confirm my colonoscopy a few days hence!!! "No, I'm on my way in for it now, I've taken the Moviprep" She said she didn't know anything about it. On arrival it transpired I was to have a CT scan, but almost passed out during it, and was shivering uncontrollably. Was given tea and biscuits, which I threw up when I got home. I had 2 days to recover. Then had to take more Moviprep for the colonoscopy a few days later. I said to the nurse (the one who had called while I was on my way in) "I needn't have taken the Moviprep the first time then? "Yes Ma'am" "Why don't you put appointments in writing?" "Yes Ma'am" "I could have avoided much distress if you had done so" "Yes Ma'am" Eventually it dawned - she didn't give a monkey's, and whatever I said, she was going to reply "Yes Ma'am" The medical treatment was adequate, but the administrative support and staff communication is appalling. I've now seen an NHS Consultant, who explained my condition far better than the private man. People forget it's not just the fact that the NHS is free at point of use, it's the fact that the staff are more intelligent, responsible and communicative. And because verbal communication can be misunderstood or mis-remembered they write everything down for you. I will never use this hospital again
