The team are incredible and I received a safe and amazing experience of birth that was very healing after a traumatic labour previously at The Royal where my choice of pain relief (water pool) was not available leaving me feeling forced into a csection by the lack of pool and the terrifying empty labour room being set up to lie back which optimises tearing of the mother. There was no comfortable facilities outside a hard floor for upright evidence based protective positions and having now given birth I am experienced in how much more painful lying back is vs standing so would have led to me missing feeling and being truly aware of the entire physical experience I wanted even if I’d not had the c section as I would have then needed an epidural.

Suggested improvements
Prompt reliable supply of gas and air is a critical need. I wanted to avoid pethidine and any long-acting pain relief, but the gas arrival was delayed (no fault of my incredible midwives, the system needs to be better). I am glad I only had gas and air in the end but nearly gave in to pethadine which I would have regretted and completely changed my incredible experience into one I had not wanted.
