My daughter was a patient on Keston ward for 8 months. During that time she was on 1:1 supervision but was still able to harm herself severely on numerous occasions because staff were untrained and asleep, (especially at night). It is supposed to be a ‘Specialist Autism Unit’ and yet most of the staff had never worked with autistic people before. There was no manager on the ward for over 6 months and the few caring permanent staff were overworked having to try and run the ward and supervise untrained Agency and Bank staff, most of whom had no clue what they were doing. The consultant was a caring man, but when I was highlighting all off my concerns about what was going on, on the ward he did nothing! Said ‘he had no say in the hiring or training of staff’, so it wasn't his job even though he supposedly has a ‘duty of care’ to his patients. No one would listen to me until my daughter managed to give herself a severe burn to her hand and I informed the commissioners who alerted the CQC and safeguarding and whilst the ward was under investigation, my daughter managed to give herself another severe burn as they'd not bothered to check and see if there were any other uncovered radiators on the ward after the first incident. Google the CQC Report of Keston and read for yourself. Everything in their report validates what I had been saying for months. They do not care about patients. It is all about money.
