My GP recently referred me for ovarian cancer screening. The doctors and other professionals I met where professional and took great care of me. However, the systems and processes in place to deal with my simple, and it happily turns out, non-existent case, where very slow and time wasteful. For example, having reviewed my case and decided there was nothing to deal with - eg, I was totally cancer free - I then got a letter inviting me to a meeting several weeks (from memory about 6 weeks) later. The letter had no indication of what I should expect - clear, not clear, more investigations - and so of course I was anxious and concerned. When I met the consultant he basically said there was nothing to worry about and that he realised the process was distressing for me, and also a terrible waste of hospital resource and time - why on earth was he spending limited clinical time to tell me nothing was wrong when it could have gone in a letter.
