My Husband was in I.C.U for 2 nights and part of one day. He was then returned to his room and I was told he could go home. I did not agree and was told by the nurse BUPA had covered us for two nights only. BUPA told me that if my Husband needed to stay longer it was o.k. We got the discharge papers around 8.30.p.m. Saturday evening and I had to wait for my carer to arrive to help me. By this time I was told the porters had gone home, a wheelchair was handed to me and I had to do the rest with my carer to get my Husband into the chair and lift down to the entrance of the Hospital where there was no one around in the pouring rain. I checked at the nurses station on the ward and found no staff, lights were all out, not a sign of any nursing staff. It was very clear to me that the unit had been closed and the staff wanted my Husband out. I cannot tell you how displeased I was to take him home after just coming out of I.C.U. into the bad weather conditions at 9.p.m. on Saturday night. We are insured on the Doctors plan of BUPA and I think the whole situation of the hospital was dreadful. My Husband should have been discharged on the following Monday. Since his discharge he has been very unwell . I am taking this matter further. Just to advise you he is a retired Consultant.
