My daughter has just had a baby in SRH, although the care in labour and immediately after Delivery was exemplary, thank you to the Midwives for their care and attention. The baby was having regular checks because of the risk of infection, after being seen early in the morning by a Midwife and Student Midwife who seemed more interested in completing forms , she did not see another Midwife all day, she said that there was a man with tattoos came to do observations on the baby a couple of times during the day, although he was very nice to my daughter he obviously was not a Midwife. As a first time Mother she and her partner had no experience of caring for a baby and the baby who was under 7lbs had not fed for over 12 hours. Was this because she had elected to bottle feed and not breast feed that she was ignored? I am aware that there is a shortage of Midwives but surely this is a Managerial fault for not providing enough Midwifery staff to provide good postnatal care. Would it have been too much trouble for a Midwife just to pop her head in the room a couple of times during the day to ask how things were going and if the baby was feeding? Yes I am aware she had a call bell but did not like to 'bother' anyone as she felt that the Midwife + Student were In a hurry to get out of the room so she thought that they must have been really busy...... really? Too busy just to spend 2 minutes to say hello and have you any problems.
