Review of Birth Centre (SMH) written by a patient
6th December 2016

I would recommend the maternity centre over the hospital because of the natural support available. I think medical interventions should be for people that really need it and not offered freely and routinely for everybody, especially the most vulnerable. For example I postulated a natural birth with no pain relief. During the last bit of labour, I was so tired and weak that even any pain relief and cesarean would have been optional! However it was within that time my son was born. If I was in the hospital, my weakness, could have been subject to intervention - whereas in the maternity centre, I had to push through the weakness. I think its important for vulnerable mums to question the intervention and not blindly trust for the sake of appeasing authority. I asked for research available on the injections that were routinely offered to everybody - which none of the midwifes or clinicians were able to find. Why would I want to have any injection without any clear research available. The staff were helpful and I would do it again. I changed midwifes though. After changing midwifes towards the final trimester, the second midwife gave me her number and visited. She was a lot more personable and understanding.

Friendly approachable staff, a peaceful calming environment. A truly wonderful experience. Although the building is dated, this is an excellent facility to have.

Excellent attentive staff. Friendly and welcoming. Couldn't ask for more- except maybe a bed for dad to stay too. Appreciate this probably isn't possible for a variety of reasons.

- The staff at Straid maternity have been very friendly and extremely helpful. - The staff have been available to answer questions and have been able to provide lots of assistance when required. - Well looked after. - You feel bad pressing the call button because it is so loud!

Person centered approach to care staff always had time and a gentle interest in your and baby's needs. Environment and facilities are excellent as is food!! I was delighted that I could get a bed at short notice when crisis hit. I'm struggling to think of what can be improved except maybe community M/U and own promotion of use of this wonderful facility.

Stroud Maternity Unit is such a incredible start for any new nurse either on older nurses like myself who needs time to recover and establish breast feeding away from younger children. I do not think I could have breast fed without the help and support of the staff here if I had gone straight home and had to deal with my 2 year old and 5 year old as well. And what an amazing place for young nurses who need help to establish the good foundations for proper preventing. Every mother should have the access to a place like this.
