Parkinson's disease The nurses need training about Parkinson patients. Most of them in the wards haven't got a clue about Parkinson's disease. Since the older generation are living longer Parkinson is on the increase and the staff in the wards should be made aware about this disease.  Parkinson's is a serious illness which needs to be highlighted. The spasm and toe curling which Parkinson's patients experience at night are not to be taken lightly but I am afraid to say that the night staff do not respond to these patients quickly. Sometimes the bowels open up and the night staff take their time responding to the patients. The day staff and nurses in the wards are very prompt in responding to these patients as they want to impress the doctors who come on their rounds during the day. The clinical nurse in charge of the ward wants her ward look neat and tidy before visiting time but they don't realise or don't know that Parkinson's patients can't get up and go to have a shower first thing in the morning because after their first medication of the day they can't move or stand on their legs. They at least half an hour for the tablets to kick in before they can function again. I am sorry and sad to say that the staff in the wards lack the knowledge and has not being trained properly about Parkinson's disease. It is not their fault that they have not been told or had the training to deal with this disease. The hospital management should be made aware of this lack of training in nurses as well as the staff who man the desk at night so that they can deal with PD patients at night properly.

Having become virtually comatose in ward 10, and the staff saying I was sleeping, I was lucky that my husband and my daughter insisted on second opinions. I then received a visit from an intensive care doctor who had me transported to the ICU. My care in the ICU (I am told by my family ) was exceptional. James, who looked after me was kind, considerate, caring, compassionate, and, was respectful of my gender and courteous to my family as well. If SMH has an all encompassing exemplar of what we should expect from nursing staff, it must be James. I would suggest that many nurses who just ' do a job ', could benefit greatly from some time spent in observing him in his duties. If I had a medal to offer, I would willingly pin it on his chest.

This hospital is absolutely disgusting. They have done nothing but mistreat my mother since the day she first went into hospital for a broken knee. They have caused several hospital acquired problems that have left to her now only having a short while to live. They repeatedly gave her the wrong medication or dose and never made sure, even in this hot weather that she had a drink. We would often find her not able to reach the water or if she could the jug would be empty or the complete jug would be spilt all over her and as she could not get out of bed she was left to lie soaked on her bed. We had meeting after meeting with members of staff and were always told - 'oh well unfortunately your mum has fallen through the cracks'. This is not good enough - we have been fighting trying to get help for our mum but there are those in Stoke Mandeville who do not have someone to help them. This hospital is a disgrace and needs looking at.

After missing an appointment due to a berivment we called to say we could not make the appointment. We called back to be informed the we had missed the appointment and my son had been discharged. We tried to explain and was told to contact our GP And restart the 6 month process. Heartless approach from a caring establishment

There is a great support team at the cancer care unit from the receptionist and all the staff in room 10. The unit is very clean and staff always have time for you and very approachable.

I was an inpatient for 5 days at the end of my chemotherapy and I atteneded the chemo unit for4 months for chemo. the staff are wonderful, all of them. Kindness and care in ward 10. I would look at the food service though. the menu is extensive and at first glance, seems to cater for all. but I fiound it very difficult to order anything that did not have a sauce/mayonnaise or cheese. The salads were good but I had hoped that the chocken wrap would make a change but it was caked in melted cheese. that is my only complaint.

Whereas I have only attended the Chemo Unit, I can't comment on the rest of this vast hospital. I have found that the staff in the Chemo and Haematology Unit are all top notch. Caring, competent and friendly and (apparently) unrushed. The nurses in Room 10 are terribly busy but they still have time to smile and pass the time of day. that helps a lot when you have cancer. I suppose we are a bit fragile, so a friendly smiling face puts one in the right frame of mind to confront this illness. The volunteers who fetches tea and sandwiches were an unexpected pleasure. I've tried hard but I am blowed if i can find a single thing to complain about. Not even the parking outside seems to be a problem.
