23rd March 2021

I was a patient for the day on 16th March 2021 and I was booked in to have a procedure on the Greenwood Day Surgery Unit. I suffer terribly with Osteoarthritis in both knees and have trouble walking a great distance, I was told that the walk from the entrance to the hospital to the unit was a challenging one, so I knew that it would be best for me to take my wheels to walk with, especially as it hasn't been long since recovering from an Arthritic Flare that I've had since last September. I could not fault the nurses or my Dr who was Dr Subhash Kandikattu, they were all very friendly, caring and just really lovely. However, after my procedure it was time for me to be discharged and they insisted on calling the porter to take me down by wheelchair, I had one bag which I had on my knees, and I said to the porter that I also had my wheels that needed to come with me. This seemed to cause him great problems and difficulties, pushing me and carrying my wheels and he liked to tell everyone we passed what a job this was, and how i had put him out and how his hands were hurting from carrying my wheels too. I even offered to hold them for him, but he declined my offer. At the time I did laugh it off, but afterwards I felt quite aggrieved and angry as to why he treated me like that, while taking me from the Unit back to the entrance of the hospital. Would he have said the same thing to another man, or an elderly lady, if the answer is no then why treat me like that. What was a nice experience in another hospital that I was concerned about, has now been tainted by the porter for treating me in that manner. If I had to go again I still would have to take my wheels, but I now know what would be coming from the porter, when I would be discharged and that now fills me with dread.
