St Mary's is a difficult place to negotiate, especially on the first few visits. It is a warren, grown almost randomly within the physical structures but not particularly organically: many parts seem add-ons as they are needed. However, that is just the buildings. I have always, in many visits over the last four years, found every member of staff, at every level I have encountered them, to be utterly committed to the welfare and support of patients and visitors. They are fully understanding, invariably kind and scrupulously helpful at all times. St Mary's is a powerful advertisement for the NHS; though, because of the nature of the buildings, you would never offer the hospital as a visual advert. A radio broadcast would do the job, I am sure. Frankly, I would far rather have a ramshackle building with glowing staff than a spanking new hospital with half-baked employees. I want to tell the whole world about the marvellous qualities of St Mary's - and, indeed, I always do tell anyone who asks as well as lots of people who don't.
