I was recently an inpatient in Barts who had cardiac surgery. The hospital is spotlessly clean and the hygiene standards excellent. The majority of staff were kind and caring - especially the Health Care Support Workers on the Ward as well as the catering team. Regrettably, I found the Junior Doctors' attitude inexcusable. They rushed around Intensive Care talking very loudly about individual patients. I had them discuss (while standing at the foot of my bed) the death of a patient & the terrible health condition of another. In addition, they hurried away 'gleefully' discussing how quick the round had taken. It was awful and really upsetting. Someone in authority should remind them that patients in Intensive Care are vulnerable human beings who (although are physically weak) are mentally strong and can hear and understand what is being said!
