My experiences as a day patient at St Albans Hospital have all been positive. They include two cataract removal surgeries and three for relief of carpal tunnel syndrome. Surgeons work both here and in private practice and I can't believe that private patients receive any better use of their skills than I have as an NHS one. Nursing staff are well versed in dealing with each speciality, with the small wards having nurses dedicated to each so that they can answer questions or deal with anxieties while patients wait for their turn to come. Post-op cups of tea and toast are offered without hesitation and care is taken that recovery is given sufficient time before anyone leaves. My wish is that the main part of the hospital could be re-opened and finances allocated from central government to allow so high a standard of care to be given to residents of the city once again without their having to travel to (and from) hospitals elsewhere.
