My review relates to the anaesthetist Dr. Karunaratne.
I had surgery at Spire Hartswood Hospital Brentwood on the 30th of September 2024. I was scheduled to have my procedure at 16:30, so I arrived at the hospital at 15:30. I did not have any food since 10AM that morning and no water for 2 hours before arriving at the hospital.
The surgeon arrived around 17:45 and was ready to start the procedure immediately, but the anaesthetist Dr. Karunaratne was not there. The anaesthetist arrived at the hospital at 19:00, 2 hours and half after the procedure was scheduled.
Of course I was not the only person waiting to have surgery, there were other people that arrived before me that needed the anaesthetist, so Dr. Karunaratne was in very high demand when he got to the hospital, presumably rushing from one operating room to another to perform the anaesthesia.
I was taken into the operating room around 19:30.
I could see the great rush in Dr. Karunaratne, he inserted the canula needle very rushed that caused a feeling of electricity inside my left hand and arm, and he pushed the fluid inside the vein with great force. Both his actions caused me so much pain the I screamed out. I felt the electricity in my arm and asked him to slow down with the fluid because I am in pain and it feels very weird, but he continued to push the fluid very hard inside my vein. I had enough time to say out loud that what I was feeling has never happened before and that it hurts very bad. I heard back the word that I should relax.
Of course in a few moments I was under sedation so I could not express my feelings further and explain to them what happened.
After having continuous pain and electricity in my left hand and arm for more than 1 week after the procedure, I had to go see several doctors to find out what is going on.
I cannot use my left hand properly even today, 17 days after the procedure.
It turns out that Dr. Karunaratne caused peripheral nerve injury in my left hand that extends to my arm. This damage might be permanent and needs a lot treatment.
I cannot be sure what caused the peripheral nerve injury, the way he inserted the canula or the great force applied when pushing the fluid inside the vein. What is for sure is that I am not able to use my left hand because of the actions of Dr. Karunaratne that arrived extremely late for my procedure and was rushing from one operating room to another.
I would like to point out out that I paid £4425 for a simple procedure and I got out with peripheral nerve injury inn my left hand and arm.
This kind of treatment should never be expected from any Doctor anywhere, but especially not when paying a lot of money in order to receive better care.
I hope Spire Healthcare will take action.
The picture I attached shows the bruise from cannulation a week after the procedure.
Mostly fantastic.
Some reception staff are in the wrong job.
Excellent hospital, great communication regarding reminders of appointments etc. Hospital was clean and tidy. Staff were all friendly and supportive.
The only minor issue was that more parking space availability for patients would be useful as typically had to wait for one to be vacated.
Treated with care and kindness from the moment you arrive, would highly recommend.
Great Hospital, I can not rate the staff that took care of me well enough. Hope i dont go into hospital again but if i do, I would recommend them. Great hospital, staff and care.
Room was nice, nurses lovely, even the hospital food was great.
I really appreciate the care and support that was provided by all the staff.
An overall good experience
Cannot fault any aspect of this hospital.
Everyone goes above and beyond
