Having had a number of admissions to this facility, what concerns me most is the general inconsistency in care that the staff provide. The quality of care seemed highly dependent on who ever happened to be on duty. While some staff seemed genuinely caring others were very difficult to engage with and some were plain rude. The fact that high proportion of staff is made up of young unqualified girls made the ward feel unsafe at times. Particularly at times of any kind of unrest. The tendency for many of the staff to hide in the office works only to compound the them/us division between patients and staff. Focus on managing risk alone as a method of care does not contribute sufficiently enough towards a recovery based approach. Also, on occasion finding that some members of staff found the distress of patients amusing did nothing to fostering trusting therapeutic relationship. Coercive physical restraint of someone who is acutely unwell is downright terrifying and only re-enforces the idea that all mental health patients are dangerous further promoting damaging stigma. The physical environment is bleak and not stimulating , like a prison . This made my admissions feel more like punishment than helpful intervention. Once I was beginning to feel better the fact that the only activity available was the tv, was very disheartening. The activity room was bismal and often locked up and even the vicar seemed to had deserted the ward. Having recently accessed my notes and I also discovered that there are many inaccuracies and untruths recorded about me for posterity. This has further tarnished the impression that I had formed of the ward. A shame really, as some staff clearly tried to provide at least adequate care.

I was taken to rydon on a police section and it is a long way out of where I actually live. Then they didn't even tell me that I was going home they just said that all they can do for me to get home was to give me money for a bus when I explained to them I wasn't able to get buses. They then said "well there nothing we can do" so then I was stuck in Taunton until God knows when because they can't provide me transport home. I am utterly apauled by this. And if anything it has caused me to feel worse than I already did. When I was actually on the 136 they treated me horribly and like I was just an object. Is this really how someone with bad mental health should be treated by the people that are meant to "care" for us??

The place saved my life and all the staff on Rydon Ward 2, Doctors, Nurses, Nursing and Service assistants and OT staff couldn't do enough for me. I was treated with respect and help was always available day and night when i was experiencing acute symptoms of my depressive illness. They where thorough with meds and checks and kept everyone safe despite the staffing issues they sometimes had I don't have the words to praise them highly enough, but the care and compassion they showed brings a tear to my eye. Thank you, you have helped me keep my life together and given me hope to have a better life and address issues that ive kept hidden for too long. I will always be grateful. Scott Fletcher

In my experience I found the staff on Rydon Ward 1 uncaring and unprofessional. I was left for hours without anyone to talk things over with in distressing helplessness and thinking I was being persecuted instead of being helped then turfed out in the early hours unwell wearing only nightwear no shoes Horrific experience and would not recommend j
