Having been asked my GP to admit myself to hospital with a referral letter, I was told that I would be seen by the surgical team soon. After arriving at the hospital at just after 4pm in the afternoon I was seen by Triage that did not ask any relevant questions related to my medical issues and asked that I sit within the A&E dept until called by the medical staff. After 6 hours my wife asked one of the nurses if there was any news on being seen (by anyone) the nurse in question was not the politest. Following a phonecall to the surgical team for answers after my wife insisted, the answer was you will have to wait. After explaining that I was not allowed to eat or drink and not done so since 10am this morning and in pain she (the nurse) decided to save time take the bloods that were needed to help diagnose with the (appendicitis). It took many attempts to try and take bloods but failed I was asked to sit back in A&E, the nurse had no compassion and certainly no patients (other than those waiting in A&E) she had a heard bedside manner. Almost sat in A&E for 7 hours my wife insisted again for answers, this time she saw a different nurse that was at first quite defensive and apologised for the fact that the were busy and there was nothing that could be done. My wife explained that she understood that this was the case but did she think sitting 7 hours and only being ambushed by a nurse with a needle whom had no bedside manner was acceptable ?. This nurse also called surgical team she did look for us and give us the explanation as to why we had not been seen for 7 hours and there was no idea as to when I would. I decided to stay for an 8 hour shift and leave following the wait. Just after midnight the surgeon called me when in a room for examination he noticed that I had not had my bloods taken for testing, he was not happy he appologised and also attempted with eventually a cannula fitted for ease. The surgeon explained that he was the only one on this evening and 1 register hence the state of despair within the department. At 2 am I was put into a bed within the A&E dept and told that when one becomes available I would be moved I was as 3.50am to ward 9. I had managed to get off to sleep when at 7am I was asked if the bed could be changed, I politely asked them to leave the room and leave the bedsheets as I had only been in the bed for 3 hours ! A fear a catalogue of events throughout the day happened one being at 9am I was asked to produce a urine sample with which I left on the side of the bed my wife at 1.15 asked for more pillows some food and for the urine sample to be removed, they at this point could see that my wife meant business! as the sample had been standing around for so long it was no good so I produced another one. After waiting for a CT scan a porter a doctor and results I had been admitted for 24 hours to be told you can leave no op needed here are some paracetamols, indigestion tablets and stronger pain killers if the pain persists or worsens please return quickly. I appreciate that they are over worked under staffed and underpaid but the experience that I encountered was one that I hope I don't fall ill any time soon. I am concerned with the care and attention that patients fail to receive and through lack of organisation and communication within the departments it is not a surprise that there are high risks of neglect a lack of compassion and mis diagnosis. For those that have received good care and attention from this hospital I suspect you are within the minority!!

I attended the a&e department with a significant amount of abdominal pain & an extremely high fever. I cannot thank the doctors & nurses from the a&e department enough for the care I received there. I was seen in prompt time & all the necessary investigations were also very prompt. However I have received the complete opposite when being seen to on the wards!..from a&e I was transferred to ward 2 with suspected appendicitis to await an us scan..I was left on a bed for over 1.5 hours without any contact from a nurse. It was the most frightening experience of my life as I lay there in agonising pain & unable to move to get some help. This was my first experience as a patient on a ward

I got rushed into A&E with what turns out to be a panic attack, i was dreading it as this hospital is known for the long waiting hours, i got seen to, X-Rayed, and had a ECG and got discharged all in 40 minutes. Great service and made me feel at piece! Thank you to the doctors and nurses who helped me in this scary time.

I was in this hospital for a total hip replacement. I can not fault my surgical team they were and still are absolutely brilliant. However the care I received at the hands of some of the staff on ward 7 was beyond disgusting. I was forced by the Physios before my op into walking day in and day out for a few days in total agony so that in the end I told them to leave me alone and since then I was in chronic unbearable pain that nothing took away. They used me as a lab rat to take meds that either made me feel so ill I was asleep for 48 hours at a stretch and sleep was the only thing that took the pain away. Having had a hip replacement One nurse tried to force me onto a toilet that was sprayed thickly with human waste. It was lucky I was so alert and was able to stop the nurse and refuse to use the toilet. I hardly ate anything while I was there and in the 5 weeks I was there I lost over a stone in weight. The food is geared towards vegetarians NOT normal people who cares if the food is nutritionally balanced if there either is not enough of it or there is no meat choices for those of us who have a taste for it and need to replace blood lost after a major operation. The menu is supposed to be seasonal but has not been changed since last April 2015 when I had my first hip done. I had one member of staff removed after she threatened me and leaned into me in a threatening manner and even threatened to get my operation cancelled which I know she has no powers to do. I would hate to think what would happen on ward 7 to any frail old ladies that can't speak up for themselves or dare not would be going through on this orthopaedic ward. I am totally disgusted at the treatment I had by the few staff I had issues with. I was also fitted for a hip brace I am having to go back to the hospital to have this re fitted because it was fitted incorrectly and then super glued so it could not even be changed at home meaning that I have had to be on total bed rest while waiting a week to go back to get this equipment sorted out. I am now seeking legal advice.
