Review of Labour Ward
12th June 2024

Midwives/doctors were very cooperative specially the labour ward midwives. They supported equally in the labour journey by understanding my feelings, the pain of the patient

Suggested improvements
I believe the midwives are well trained. However the room was warm and something needs to be done of central cooling system in labour rooms.

My son had a cluster of seizures, which isn’t unusual for him. We had to attend A&E because we’d had to give 2 rescue medicines. Protocol for seizures is to keep the patient in for 24hrs but this protocol is not necessary for our son as he doesn’t go a day without seizures. You need to have some way of distinguishing between certain patients who have seizure conditions, which the Dr’s have never heard about and don’t understand, and be able to make a decision on what they are being told by parents who know more about the condition than they do. If we didn’t think he was ok to go home then we wouldn’t be wanting to leave. Trust the caregivers/parents.

Suggested improvements
Listening to expert parents about a condition they have never heard of.

Great nurses and doctors gave first class care under difficult / busy circumstances

Suggested improvements
Not at the hospital however the ambulance took way too long to arrive (nearly 2 hours) and feel that if my circumstances had been less fortunate I could have died. The ambulance service require additional resources.

No prompt communication and the system used to determine who gets seen was not clear. It changes everytime you speak to a different nurse.

Suggested improvements
If the patient's case was not deem an emergency and they will not be attended to for over 3hrs, maybe send them home and the emergency cases can then be treated. I was in the hospital for 10hrs + only to be prescribed a pain killer at the end.

My mother suffers from Dementia. She easily gets disoriented and has short term memory. She arrived in A&E with a head injury at 12.00. No neurological observations were done. She had CT scan, xrays, blood tests ,ECG. At 21.00 still not reviewed by a Dr. I asked 3 times for pain relief, no nurse came to administer analgesia. I had to leave her alone to get myself food. My mother went to the bathroom alone. She could have fallen over! I discharged her as I didn't want to leave her alone all night in A&E.

Suggested improvements
Neurological observations should have been done regularly. Pain relief offered and given. A nurse practitioner could have explained some of the test results.

Waiting time was terrible. Care was disgusting.

Suggested improvements
After waiting 7 hours I was told they was only seeing people from 11:30am and it was 11:30pm. I was given medicine in iv and still don’t know to this day what it was they gave me. Also given tablets to which I’ve taken Ibuprofen but the nurse insisted I took them, they was ibuprofen. Once she knew I had taken already she told me to stop and don’t take them
