Review of Accident & Emergency
5th January 2023

We saw lots of staff and they were all very helpful although sometimes we were asked questions about actions our GP had taken that we didn’t know the answer for. It came across that they felt we should know thereasons why . We were in the hospital for approx 7 hours but were continuously moving through the process and didn’t wait longer than 50-60 minutes .

I went to A&e as i developed difficulties breathing, i am pregnant and suffer from asthma. The triage doctor was worried about me and sent me to urgent rafting. I had to walk there with the help of nurses as there were no porters. Rafting was complete chaos. No doctors treating patients. I was made to sit for hours with nobody checking on me and with no help for my breathing difficulties. A doctor quickly examined me but he rushed so much he did nt detect my chest was congested and did nt offer any help. He was just complaining how tired he was to his colleagues then left after his shift. When i asked the nurses repeatedly for help they said the waiting time to see a doctor was 7h. I left at that point- better to die at home than in that place.

There were no doctors/staff. Those who were there apart from the triage doctor seemed ill equipped to deal with that amount of pressure and were not actually doing anything to improve the situation. I could have died that day along with my baby and nobody cared.

The doctor that I saw in UTC made sure that I was seen by another doctor. The doctor that I saw in the 2nd department was lovely, very caring and explained everything that they were doing.

I was admitted to hospital for 11/12 days (in Sunrise A ward, Bay 2 before eveventually being moved to Side Room 8) with a severe ulcerative colitis flare up and the care and treatment I received was very good/excellent. Staff were very friendly, caring and compassionate and hard working with a very good attitude - the nurses are incredibly hard working in particluar the senior day nurses and IBD nurse Farhan. The orderlies were also hard working and committed. There were fewer staff on the weekend which was not ideal - at one time only one nurse per 10 patients, but the staff who were there gave their utmost. A doctor/consultant checked in on me every day/most days (thw first weekend was a bit quiet) and they were all very good - good at explaining options etc. I felt like I was in very safe hands particularly with Dr Kay Leun (I may have misspelt her name, but she was a gastro doctor who was wonderful), Dr Al Zanaty (who I had seen before as a substitute for my own gastro consultant, Dr Ansari, who I was a bit surprised did not come to see me, especially as I had been following all his advice during the flare and still ended up in a very bad way at A&E ) - Dr Al Zanaty kept me well informed of how treatment was going/I was responding to treatment and Dr Reena (one if the surgeons - she checked me in case I needed an emergency bowel removal and was very reassuring). I also saw a nutritionist - Jas - who was very good too and followed up with me on discharge. Some things could have been better organised - e.g. the toilet in my bay ran out of toilet paper at 11.40pm one night and I was told by one of the staff at the nurses desk that it wouldn't be restocked until the cleaner arrived in the morning and that I should use the had paper towels instead. Given that I was passing a lot of diarrhoea multiple times during the night this was quite difficult to contend with. Plus you cannot flush paper towels down the loo as they will clog the pipes/drains. Fortunately one of the patients in the bay had biodegradable, flushable wet wipes and she kindly gave me a pack. Given that I already had an extremely raw anus / rectum - as had been passing 20+ violent bloody stools a day for a couple of weeks before admission - using hard paper towels on an already sensitive area was not an appealing idea. Also given that I had no bowel control and had extreme diarrhoea (going 20+ times in a 24 hour period) it would have been better to have been in a side room with my own toilet from the start - this would have avoided the numerous "accidents" I had when I couldn't make it to the loo in time (my bed was furthest from the loo) or when the toilet was occupied by another patient. I tried to use a loo in the other women's bay (even the men's one once) but because of the distance involved it was often too late or occupied. Obviously it is embarrassing / humiliating but I could not wear nappies because they caused more pain around my abdomen (it was extremely sensitive). I was less stressed in the Side Room and slowly started to improve/get better. Stress is a trigger for ulcerative colitis and at least the stress of not getting to the loo / it being occupied was removed in the side room.

Could have had better sign posting that you need to get a ticket first when you get to A&E.

Turned up for appointment. After waiting one hour was told Dr was not coming because he had the flu. One nurse said she didn’t have his number. But another nurse did and eventually phoned him and we were told he was not coming. One hour and 10 minutes after I arrived!!! This is not acceptable.

When asked why the call button and IV alarm were ignored, the reply was " because we're sitting around doing nothing " In a side ward and was checked once in nine hours. On IV fluids, antibiotics, oxygen and nebuliser when they were reminded.

I want to say a massive thank you to Vicky didn’t get her surname but I know she’s from Dublin! She was amazing and I appreciate everything she done for me I was petrified of taking any pain relief and she done everything in her power to make sure I was ok and she kept checking on me and she reassured me so much about the pain relief that I eventually took it! She was the best midwife I had in there! Me and my partner have got her a little present that we will be dropping in! But she made me feel at ease and very comfortable through out my days there when I was in labour I don’t know if she would remember us but Vicky keep doing what you do best! Jade & Shane xxxx
