A suspected stroke, waited 2 h ooh re for an ambulance and then 9 hours in A&E . Seeing others patients sitting so closely, in pain and agony, no privacy, results very vague and medication not explained fully. Told needed to see GP and results will be with them. No water readily available until trolley came round twice with tea but no water,! Doctors and all the staff stressed out, too much paperwork. So so upset and felt lost in the system that used to be our great NHS.

Suggested improvements
More care and understanding with space to breath and time taken to truly make the patient experience better and reassuring.

Overall the care I got was good, but there were a few issues that could have been improved on

Suggested improvements
I came in at 7am for a 7.20am appointment made by NHS 111. Apparently they don’t go by the appointment times. I was there from 7am to 5pm- which is a crazy long time! I was initially told I didn’t have shingles, but by the end of the 10 hours and seeing various docs, I was told it was 95% sure shingles! The doc also said I was going to be kept in for observation, only to be told hours later that they would send me home. I was passed from dept to dept to then wait for hours. The seats were incredibly uncomfortable and I asked for pain relief as my back was going into muscle spasms, but never got any.

ENT doctor at A&E was absolutely brilliant, however the doctor at Ocean B ward did not give me clear answers for my questions. The result of my 2nd x-ray was not communicated clearly and when I asked for further investigaton I was told to go to my GP. They have also lost my documents at the ward and still unsure if they were found. I have noticed that nurses came into my room without reading my documents/handover therefore they were not aware of my condition. Otherwise, nurses were kind and helpful.

Suggested improvements
Nurses need to read patient's file before they go into their room so they are aware of their condition. Documents need to be kept confidential and make sure they are not lost.

When I entered the A&E in the main forum area I was a bit confused as to where to go but as soon as I spoke to the initial member of staff, I was told where to go and where and walked around to the main A&E area where after a short wait I was dealt with very well. I'm a complex case and as soon as I explained a few things to the Doctors, instead of taking the I know best route that my GP unfortunately does, they asked relevant questions and explained what is happening, this certainly sped things up. My mind was put at rest (I'm a chemotherapy patient) and I was given the means to share the findings with my Oncology team at Guys. I even spoke to a couple of members of staff when I left saying I use the NHS alot and they had an efficient and human department.

Suggested improvements
Seating I guess was a bit lacking.

The team in resus on 28/05/23 and the HDU team on shift 29/05/23 were world class. They worked efficiently to support me during my critical hours. I am forever indebted to the NHS

Horrendous ordeal from start to finish. The easing of my pain could have been rectified on the Tuesday I came in by the surgeon. Instead I had to go through vicious tests by lesser qualified doctors until the surgeon saw me again two days later. I felt I was used as a gineau pig for doctors to learn from. I had to keep asking for saline in the first two days as I knew I was dehydrated. There is more but too much to put on here. I am suffering from ptsd due to my treatment.

Suggested improvements
An awful lot! Try listening to your patient for one. Have a proper plan.
