Review of Queen’s - Accident & Emergency
25th April 2024

There was one very rude nurse that when I was struggling to breathe said that I’m speaking so I can obviously breathe. And once admitted I spent the night in a corridor and then was an extra bed in a room where everyone was in a bay and had no privacy and couldn’t have my bed plugged in cuz there was only one outlet where my bed was. One lady was discharged and I asked to be put in their bay, yet someone else was put there. I felt like I wasn’t being treated as a proper patient.

Suggested improvements
The nurse in A&e needs training on how to deal with patients. The rudeness, lack of compassion is inexcusable.

In the first triad part, the nurse was very good at communicating and caring for my well-being and the process was relatively quick, from entrance to triad, and blood rest, eeg, and ct scan within 2 hours. However I was then made to wait an extra eleven hours after that without any communication about my wait time, no communication about how my tests were, and I was made to feel like an irritance rather than a cared for patient. When I approached the sister yo convey my worries and concerns, I was fobbed off with responses such as “my shift has ended now” and “I’m on my break now” and when I said (after 14 hours) that I was tired, dizzy, hungry and stressed, I was told I could discharge myself “at my own risk” and that all the tests I had done 11 hours previously would be deleted and I would need to come in again and do it all again for 12+ hours. This was not only me, there were other patients in a similar boat, and I left the hospital feeling worse than when I had entered 15 hours ago. In the end I saw a nurse only after she realised I was not well, took 5 minutes and was told all my tests were ok and I could go home.

Suggested improvements
More and better communication would make the whole process more bearable as maybe I could make a decision earlier on to discharge myself if I knew I would be sitting waiting for a further eleven hours. And would be a good idea to retrain the sister to better deal with sick patients who just want an answer.

I was treated very well by all the staff and they were super friendly and helpful at all times

Suggested improvements
The wait in A&E was really long. Would have liked to be seen earlier (awaited for approximately 6-7hrs) and given a bit more updates at the time.

Waited 17 hours, no food Becouse nurse forgot. I was the only one without food. Wrong diagnosis for 4th time, forced fly to another country to do private treatment. Overall the worst experience of my entire life . Will try in the future use another hospital .

Suggested improvements
Doctors seems not to care. Really poor explanation of the symptoms and cause. Could be nice if the queens urology department shows a bit of empathy.

The first GP I see accused me of trying to get a scan quicker, what I had previously been referred by the gp for . Told me it was a gyne issue and I can go home because he won't do nothing. I was sobbing I was in excluding pain he only sent me somewhere else because I literally begged him because of the pain. Round at the urgent tratment bit, Got shouted at for asking for pain meds by the nurse I was instructed to go to to ask for pain meds. Told me it's because of me keep asking for pain meds, that the wait is so long because they have to keep calling the Dr back. Was in a&e for around 19 hours didn't see a Dr and the charge nurse lied to me about my scan results. An ovarian cyst was found she told me it was cyaticia. I corrected her and told her the sonographers had showed me and I was just met with her shouting me down saying its a gyne problem I shouldnt have gone a&e and she will not be sending me to gyne. I asked for a copy of my scan notes, she said she would give me them but then refused I was asking for help from other members of staff as she was blanking me and she kept shouting tell her I'm busy. I was in to much wait so had to leave then went over to King Georges where I had an additional 8 hour wait. The staff couldn't have been more unsympathetic and nasty if they tryed. This was the 2 nurses in the blue outfits the pregnant lady was lovely.

Suggested improvements
Listened Offered pain medication Referred me to gyne to see why the cyst was so excruciating Not shouted at me Not discussed my health conditions in front of a room full of people Could have been sympathetic to my pain and not sent me away crying in pain with no medication.

Mum is 91 years old and was put in a corridor for 9 hours on a trolley and then transferred to Majors for a further 4 hours. There was very little supervision in the corridor and we had to stay with her as I felt any of the patients in the corridor could have died and it would have been hours before anyone noticed. Whilst the nurses were helpful upon arrival, we didnt see a doctor for 12 hours.

Suggested improvements
Communication and the monitoring of patients.

I arrived at around 1:40pm on Tuesday 16th April having been sent to A&E by my GP. I had had what had been diagnosed as a viral infection at a previous GP appointment for 12 days at this stage but had developed chest pain, difficulty breathing even at rest and and increased heart rate so was sent to A&E. A blood test was taken, IV implemented and fluids and pain meds given, along with an X-ray performed. All happened several hours after my arrival. Between each interaction I was sent to wait in the general waiting area where I remained, with no communication until around 10am the following morning (17th April), when I was told by a doctor that I had pneumonia. I was told i had pneumonia and had shown indications of a potential blood clot in blood tests given the previous day. I was asked to continue to wait for a CT scan and to have IV antibiotics administered. I moved from the hard waiting room chairs to a blue armchair which reclined. Here I received IV antibiotics again with no communication or indication of how long I would be there or wait for the CT scan. The CT scan was eventually carried out at around 10:30pm, (17th April). I remained on the blue armchair until the following day, (18th April), until around midday when I was transferred to a bed in the middle of a ward. Eventually at around 5pm on day 3, (18th April), I was told there was no clot and i was being discharged with antibiotics to take at home. I arrived on Tuesday 16th April afternoon and left on Thursday evening 18th April with very little care taken for my comfort nor very much information shared to set expectations for time I’d wait, where I’d be placed etc.

Suggested improvements
More information. Time expectation set. Adequate setting for care. I was not able to rest or sleep for the duration of my care due to having to wait in the waiting room for almost 24hrs, then on an armchair for a further 24hrs. Surely this impacts the speed in which any one can recover. There was also an obvious impact on the level of care being received depending on who was leading the nurses during shifts.
