The care from the staff on Birchington ward was second to none,! I stayed for 3 nights and was treated with great TLC by all. Not only medically but they gave their time with compassion, understanding and empathy. True nursing not just a number. They gave me light in a very dark time and I am grateful for the amazing people I have met in this experience, names are too many to remember but a few that stay in my mind are Jane Watkins, Claire , my consultant Anastasia and Joseph. Sandi, Rachael, danielle . Ruth , the theatre staff , Nicky who took me to theatre and the ladies in the scanning department . Those whose names I did not know I shall not forget their kindness.
The food choices available are varied and plenty to give people choice.
I know you can't class a hospital stay as an enjoyable time but the nursing staff on the ward made it so. They were caring, friendly and attentive - assisting in whatever was required. They always made time for me. I am disabled and sometimes need a little extra help and assistance with everyday tasks - this was given without asking. I found the ward clean and pleasant during my stay. I had to have a dressing change done today and I arranged a time to attend the ward. Not only was a bed ready for me to lay on but the trolley was laid out ready with fresh dressings and the nurse was ready straight away. I cannot commend all the staff on the ward highly enough. They not only got me through a very bad time but have become friends in doing so. I have to have some of my medication at set times during the day but these don't match the 'drug round' times but the nurses did everything they could to ensure I got the correctly. Even the catering staff were friendly and did anything they could to make my stay more acceptable. I am a slightly 'fussy' eater but they always came up with something to tempt me - and it was good quality too.
If I may add two negative remarks :- Sometimes I felt that the nurses were badly let down by the doctors (yes - I know they are very busy) but it was almost impossible to find a doctor when one was needed. Also the pharmacy seemed to be very slow in sorting out my medication. I need to have 4 lots of tablets at set times but, to start with, the nursing staff were not able to get the drug written up quickly enough by the doctors and then there were some very long waits for the tablets to be sent up from the pharmacy. On more than one occasion one of the nurses actually went to the pharmacy to try and speed them up.
I know this is an anonymous survey but I am more than happy to put my name to it.
Many thanks for helping me through this time. All the best.
Debbie Howard.
The nursing staff are kind and caring. Admission was proficient and clear. Op went smoothly. Food was great! Medication on time. Ward clean. Night staff were busy but not noisier than expected. There was no-one around to help me back to bed after my shower but they were busy (night shift). I managed it eventually.
