A relative was admitted to the vascular ward at Morriston. Although we couldn't fault the surgical team ( they were excellent) the nursing care on the ward was virtually non -existent. During the admission we observed patients falling after using the bathroom unsupervised, dressings going unchanged, nurse call bells being ignored for 20 mins or so and patient information being miscommunicated to relatives. If you didn' t go in with an infection the chances were pretty high that you would have one on discharge. The ward manager needs to take a long hard look at how this ward is running. It is as though the patients are an inconvenience - the majority if the nursing staff seem to think that nursing consists of sitting huddled at the nursing station on their mobile phones, discussing their night out or next holiday. Nursing is clearly just a job and not a vocation. They should be thoroughly ashamed of the standard of care they are providing. Ill tell you one thing for certain - They will never never be without work on this ward since they are creating work for themselves by their clinical negligence. Bring back the old Matrons and ban mobile phones and care may improve. How these staff get any job satisfaction is anyones guess.
