I am under the care of a consultant psychiatrist at this hospital as an outpatient. I find the consultant very cold, clinical and generally unempathetic. I do not feel comfortable in his presence due to his demeanour and I feel unable to talk to him about the problems I have. I was told that my GP prescribes a medication incorrectly and that I am partly to blame for taking this medication. In addition to this I was told that he would like me to stop taking all medication on the idea that I will simply 'get stronger'. I asked what therapy I would receive to enable to to 'get stronger' and l was told that no talking therapy is available to me. Since being told that I need to become stronger I have not noticed any improvement in my mental health. With no support or input I do not see how the consultant's seemingly simple plan will work out. The same consultant reduced one of my medications. I was ill after the reduction. When I asked him about this he said that others would not have been ill as a result of this change and that it was in fact the beliefs I hold about medication was the cause of my illness. If mental illness could be improved by a professional telling a patient that they need to 'become stronger' then I am sure it would be groundbreaking news by now.
