Review of District Nurses East
18th May 2024

My father was on palliative care for a year and the care he had from the District Nurses in conjunction with St Luke’s Hospice and [name removed] enabled him to die at home with dignity and not in Derriford Hospital. Dad had stunning treatment from all the lovely District Nurses and even when I phoned many times I was reassured and treated as if I was important and not an irritant . It is not exaggeration to say that these ladies are angels. There is a lot that is wrong with the NHS but this service is not one of them .

This is a criticism of the system that handcuffs the nurses to give prompt treatment when someone is in pain after 5pm. I phoned 111 palliative care at 5.10pm as Dad needed an injection for breakthrough pain and was in a lot of pain. They said someone would call me back. I told them District Nurses would come out but I had to go through 111. 2 and a half hours later a doctor phoned back and asked if Dad still needed the emergency pain relief injection and if he did he (doctor) would call District Nurses to come out . Barbaric!!! Luckily Dad lives 5 minutes drive from Hospice and we were able to circumvent this ridiculous system . This out of hours 111 palliative care is not working . Another time , when he could swallow I had given him a dose of Oxy and just got him to sleep but needed to speak to 111 to get nurses out and handler told me to wake him out to say how much pain he was in. His tumour was in ear canal and I am not sure which bit of deaf and dying the handler did not understand. This system for all concerned needs improving .
