Review of King George’s - Accident & Emergency
10th August 2023

I took my 94 year old Aunt to accident and emergency who was in terrible pain with her back and ribs. She was treated well given an ECG, Xray and a blood test. The department was so busy and such a shame with drug addicts and mentally disturbed people adding to their lot. The whole department treated my Aunt so well with kind care and attention. Gave her medication and explained how to take them.

Suggested improvements
It would have been great to have finished a bit earlier and the test results quickly seen, read and then discharge her but they were really busy I cannot fault them they were working really hard.

The urology consultant was rude he greeted me with Ann why you hear told you go to your gp my carer mentioned to him my super Pubic catheter should be changed every 4 weeks and hasn’t been done for 4 months he replied maple suit urology will change now I explained that the matron has left me with no facility for me to change my catheter and won’t give me an appointment he asked the nurses to sort it out and transfer me up why we was waiting a manager of outpatient was present I explained why they won’t see me and was recommend to report the matron on maple suit to pals that I should not be left with a catheter in that’s bleeding it smells of rotten flesh and that they have a duty of care then the consultant came back in and basically spoke to me extremely rude and said I’ve just been speaking to the matron they won’t see you because I’m extremely rude and bad behaviour I wanted to cry he never even looked at the dressing I have and said both the can do for rude people and the carer also advised that the catheter is blocked he”s reply is she is rude she will have to sort it out and I then said to him doctor have I raised my voice at you or been rude or ignorant he said no I the expressed concern I have no where to get my catheter done and I have been branded this label without a fair trial I have been going to this unit for 2 years now this matron has branded this label and I’ve not been able to clear my name and my side of the story everyone is going on the say so of the matron I attended maple suit dec 2022 severe pain and required SPC change I was transferred down to Erica ward by ambulance the nurse greeted us in waiting room and there is a bed in the public waiting room the ambulance driver highlighted to the nurse is Ann being transferred to this bed or having Treatment in another room she replied no it’s being done here the ambulance driver said I’m not transferring a female patient and men in the waiting room she replied be fine there is a curtain he said no it’s no dignified and not right I also complained on maple suit the side room made for 1 patient but they have added another bed and no curtain between the beds and they have multiple times tried to put a man in with me and I have refused and have rights, Now I’m paralysed chest down I also have seizures and require personal care how do you think it feels like to have men in same room why I’m having personal care eg bowels open how digradeinh is that or a sezuire not only for me them as well, so my next appointment was Jan 2023 the care home was in lock down and I had covid feb appointment I had sezuire so was told couldn’t go 3rd appointment had sezuire so they kicked me off the list and said ask to be referred again by gp so assistant manager of the nursing home highlighted I have complex needs and times I’m unable to come then the matron mentioned that it’s not a 24hr hotel and it’s a big issue with Ann not sharing the side room and refuses nurses so the manager spoke to me and highlighted the issues I replied and told the manager they are putting men in with me and she was shocked and said really I explained my concerns that having something so personal done is bad enough but to also be forced to share the room when I do need personal care or sezuires and being exposed in front of male or female I also mentioned there is an Indian nurse that I’m scared of because she causes me more pain than I normally have so the manager expressed our concern with this so I received an appointment think March/April I had a carer with me was out in waiting room again in the bed 2 nurses I have never seen before normally it’s a sister rank that normally changes because it gets stuck and can be very painful because my bladder to sensitive I lied back why the nurse cleaned the area and I was crying in pain the carer told the nurse could she be bit more gentle because of how much pain I was in then 2 nurses was preparing trolley and new catheter I was chattito my carer not nurses and said I’m not sure I can do this every month and carer said it will be sorted and I needed an appointment with my consultant I explained to my carer at time’s infection and the pain makes me feel like wanna lash out she said I know Ann then the nurse approached and started to pull on the tube it was stuck and I was in agony I was crying the nurse said that I’m in to much pain and needed advice what could be done she went away for about 5min came back and said that an ambulance has been booked the carer said what’s happening next the nurse replied Ann has refused to let us do it and the carer said Ann has not mentioned anything I did not say stop or leave it nothing why would I attend and say I refuse doesn’t make sense and the nurses are lying my carer contacted care home for support the nurse spoke to the nurse involved and she made alleyway I refused and threatened to slap her I have never ever threatened anyone with that the nurse from bupa asked the nurse to please change it and she refused and was rude to the bupa nurse and would not put in writing or discharge letter then the manager of the care home rang and said that she needs to talk to them the carer went to there office and on return the carer said that the manager tried to speak to the nurse she refused and refused any written information I had a witness that day and there was no threatening behaviour she advised the care home that the nurse is making false allegations I asked politely if they could get someone senior I was told there is no one in authority and have been left in this state that I can’t get my catheter changed there I will have to go emergency every month I explained I can’t do that the ambulance refuses to take me because it’s not an emergency and I agree with that also outpatients not allowed take patients to emergency either I want to clear my name and possibly have a meeting with the matron and her boss so that some areas am be made I am not guilty apart from sharing a side room and that’s basic human rights as a women this is having a severe impact on my health and now rather kill myself than be branded and making my life and health harder than it should be please can someone help me

Suggested improvements
Consultant didn’t have to be rude and take sides of a fellow worker I would of hoped as a consultant and has the power to say does matter the SPC needs to be urgently changed or she will end up with sepsis but no I was let down and then embarrassed in front off all the nurses and outpatient management saying I’m RUDE he never even checked that I’m bleeding and infection leaking out the site was not made welcome and was abused verbally by a consultant that isn’t even my consultant and have waited since last year for this appointment and cancelled 4 times

Overall my experience was great, however the first doctor I saw was a complete disgrace he was ready to send me home, my wife and I felt he treated the whole thing as a joke, it was only when he made 2 calls that he was told I needed to been seen, I don’t remember his name. I would definitely remember if I ever had the opportunity to see him again

Suggested improvements
More information would be great and of course the time one has to waitc

I went in after suffering a severe asthma attack and my breathing was compromised. I needed to be nebulised and I was made to wait by the triage nurses in minors. Once I was nebulised 4 hours later I was then kept waiting on a chair in the minors for another 14 hours until I was finally given a recliner chair to rest on. By this stage I was severely exhausted, dehydrated and heart rate was up. The doctors were apologetic. It turned out they kept me waiting as my bloods were showing a sign of a possible clot on my lungs for which the did various tests. The fact that my condition was this serious and I wasn’t given a bed to lay on or even a trolley it’s in my opinion life threatening. If it wasn’t for my daughter constantly pestering the nurses i would probably have suffered a heart attack. I was sent home 20 hours later straight after being on a drip and nebs. It’s been 4 days and I have a long recovery ahead of me which I feel was prolonged because of lack of care. I am terrified of going back there again. There are serious safeguarding issues at this a&e as I was left overnight on a chair semi unconscious with patients who were severely intoxicated with drugs and alcohol. I recall being approached by a man through the night time and time again and the staff did nothing.

Suggested improvements
Train your triage nurses and reception nurses better. They couldn’t hear a wheeze but my abdomen was fluctuating so hard and I couldn’t even speak as I was unable to breathe properly. They are not qualified to assess correctly. The whole system is wrong. King George A&E is a death trap, especially if you are actually really sick and not able to make a song and dance about it.

In the last few weeks I have been in twice and on both occasions I was treated with excellent care and dignity. Though there was different staff on both shifts I was treated exactly in the same way and would have no hesitation to come to this hospital if I needed to.

I was very impressed with the care I received at KGH, although I feel that I was lucky as it did not seem overly busy there.

Suggested improvements
Cannot fault the care I received, my only issue was with other patients leaving the toilets on the ward in a disgusting state, urine on seat and floor and soiled clothing and pads thrown on the top of the bin, however these were cleaned up relatively promptly.
