Everyone was very helpful

One nurse tried to give me food even though I was not allowed to have food due to waiting for a scan. The nurse told the head nurse and the head nurse was a little rude - ‘she said leave her then if she doesn’t want to eat’ in a rude tone. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to eat, it was that I wasn’t allowed to eat. So I think think it is important for the nurses to be informed of this important factor - whether the patient is allowed food or not.

I was misdiagnosed via ECG in Emergency Care at 9.30am on Friday 6th October. As a consequence I was ushered to Majors where I spent the entire day. When I was finally given another ECG by a consultant who had the discernment to realise leads were probably incorrect positioned; I had a repeat ECG at about 5.30 which was normal. Unfortunately I still couldn’t leave until bloods came back. My first sample had clotted and another wasn’t done until 9.30pm!! So I sat for hours worrying about a condition I likely didn’t have. I didn’t leave until 10.30pm that night. I think this is disgraceful and the young woman who done my initial ECG obviously needs training.

I went to A&E with chest pains on Friday 6th October. Initially, I had a positive experience, as I immediately saw a doctor and got transferred to the emergency section of A&E. I had blood tests and an X-ray immediately. The issues started when I was transferred to SDEC. There was no communication about my treatment, whenever I asked what was the next step, I was ignored. I was on a drip for about 2 hours and I didn’t know if I was going home or being referred for more tests. There were other patients moaning with pain, who were not treated with basic humanity or acknowledgment. Patients are only acknowledged when blood pressure and temperature is checked. Most nurses don’t introduce themselves or even make eye contact. It makes you feel like a piece of meat. I had a CT scan after 14 hours of waiting. I was told one of my blood tests had an elevated D Dimer. Then I took another blood test and told there was an error and it couldn’t be used. I was reassured that the concerning blood test was probably wrong because my CT scan was fine. I wasn’t convinced so I asked for another clarifying blood test. I was told to go home and I would get a phone call with the result of the new blood test. I missed the call and called back but was told that they don’t give results over the phone, when the doctor literally told me that he would give me the results over the phone. I was told to get my results from my GP but the GP never received any results. Summary of issues: - long waiting time to get lab results - no communication of the process/next steps - nurses talking loudly about other patients - little respect or dignity - error in my blood test that added more waiting time The only nurse that treated me well was a bank nurse called Kelly. She was very good. The other nurses showed no care at all.

Suggested improvements
- better communication with patients - for nurses to not discuss patients loudly in front of other patients. I learned that there was a 67 year old homeless patient that they were trying to kick out. - for nurses to smile and introduce themselves before grabbing your arm for testing - for nurses to check on patients more frequently. Some were walking around doing nothing but not checking on patients - gossiping or staring into space. - faster and accurate lab results These problems were in SDEC

I went there they did some investigation, Gave me intravenous antibiotics. My urine started flowing again, I went home.

Suggested improvements
I don’t believe that there was a Urologist full time at the hospital, and I think that I may have had longer lasting treatment if there was.

The staff treated me very well and we're very informative, but there was long delays in my care. I had a head CT scan taken and the IT system had broken down meaning there was a delay in the report but this information had not been relayed to me and we had to wait a few hours before we were told about this.

Suggested improvements
Having more regular communication with patients and giving proper updates would make the experience a lot better, as well as cutting down on waiting times.

Waited 10+ hours to be seen by an A&E doctor. DID NOT EVEN see a doctor. They did a blood test, no result was given, they gave me fluids and took a urine sample and told to go home. Appalling is not even the word to describe my experience. Some staff were nice but not knowledge and other staff just pure rude. I cannot emphasise how I waited over 10 plus hours to just be given fluids and told to go home!!!!

Suggested improvements
Seen me sooner? Kept me aware of what's actually happening present and what is going to happen. Absolutely ridiculous
