Absolutely dreadful ward. My mum was here for 5 days and they failed her on so many levels. She has dementia and despite the nurse in charge being reminded of it and having pointed out that she didn’t have a blue wristband or a butterfly nothing was done. I was even asked after she had been in the ward for 4 days whether she had dementia! I had to contact the dementia team myself to get it sorted. They managed to loose her dressing gown and didn’t seem to care. There was no evidence that her needs were being addressed and as a result she was discharged to the IPR unit only to be transferred back to A&E 2 later dehydrated and medically unfit. My mum has stopped speaking since she has been in hospital and not once has anyone contacted me to find out about her to help them care for her.

Suggested improvements
Communicate with relatives/carers. I had to call this ward several times to find out what was happening with my mum and they didn’t call back when they said they would. Work with relatives/carers of people with dementia who can’t speak for themselves, it will help you care for them and reassure their relatives that they are being cared for. Allow relatives/carers to choose food options for patients that aren’t able to choose for themselves.
