Attended A&E with my partner, he has a tumour growing out of his skull and this caused him so much pain when we eventually got in IV Morphine was barely touching it. Rather than wait 2 hours + for an ambulance I drove him in, it was 1am so not busy. I am 5'4 8 stone, my partner was dizzy, vomiting, screaming in pain, could not move his head or neck, could barely walk so I parked right outside the doors, half on the pavement so there was plenty of room for an ambulance to get past (I have a nissan micra so not a big car). On arrival I was met by a security guard who - despite seeing my partner screaming in agony with a towel around his neck, hanging out of the car and me in tears told me I could not park there. I told him I would move it but my priority was potentially saving my partners life by getting him into the building. He told me where the wheelchairs were then proceeded to watch over me, arms folded like I was a criminal whilst I struggled to get my partner out of the car, into the (very old rickety) wheelchair and into a&e before again reminding me I may get a fine if I did not move my car. My partner is now in a specialist neurology ward - possibly facing brain surgery. That is how serious his condition is. I am not sure if the security guard is fed up with people misusing A&E (understandable), having to tackle challenging behaviour or was having a bad night. However, a bit of compassion and humanity would not go amiss when someone's life is in danger and their loved on is trying to get them emergency care. I am not stupid; I know I shouldn't park there but if it's a difference between life and death I am sorry, but I will park on the roof if I need to. My constructive feedback would be: Security - it's a tough job but please have a bit of compassion and don't treat people like dirt. Parking - In the absence of getting an ambulance within two hours which could endanger life there needs to be somewhere closer to the doors for family/ carers to access the building in such an emergency. There were barely any staff, so I had to transport him about and be his voice (he could not speak or communicate at this point). I could not just leave him there and drive off. I did move my car once he was in a bay and safe. Wheelchairs - please provide more near the doors so patients can get into the building safely. Even if they are rickety old ones, they do the job!
