Written by a NHS patient
10th October 2023

My wife is a patient. A fall necessitated her admission to IRH. The staff caring for her have been very kind and attended to her needs very well. My greatest concern is that in the 22 days since admission my wife has been moved to other wards late at night on 3 occasions when normally, sleep would have been the obvious norm. I have visited twice daily, every day, at the same times and a nurse friend of long standing each afternoon. Today I was with her until after 19:00 hours as usual. At about 21:30 hours she whipped away to another ward, As with the other moves no notice was given. They have my number, nothing. On Friday, October 6th, She was taken by ambulance to the Beatson for a scan leaving at 08:00 hours accompanied by a nurse. They returned to the IRH by 12:00 hours and all we were told was it was either the wrong day or the wrong hospital. The ambulance driver told staff prior to leaving the IRH that there was a concern because patients normally go to the Royal for that procedure. His comment fell on deaf ears. No enquiry was attempted to ascertain if the trip was correctly planned. I am concerned not only for the inconvenience to my wife, but also for the unnecessary cost for the NHS when we are so often reminded of how much missed appointments cost. Room for improvement? Definitely. Paper trails tell you nothing unless they look at and understood and then followed up to better the great service we expect from our NHS. Perhaps, some day we will get political appointees worthy of the necessary task of returning our health service to the high standard it used to be so proud of. With my sincere best wishes and apologies to the Charge Nurse on G South who bore the brunt of my vexations and frustration on the evening of 11/10/2023. Thank you for your calm handling of my rant.
