Review of Ward 33 (Rowan/Beech Ward) written by a patient
20th July 2017

The midwives and student midwives were very helpful and kind especially with respect to teaching me how to breastfeed. Being a first time mother I was anxious about everything and found them very informative. The only area where I feel needs improvement is help for mothers who have had a c-section and are immobile initially. Either we should be allowed to have our partner or a female relative stay with us overnight to help or they need to provide more help. I felt I needed help as my baby did not sleep at all the 2 nights I was in hospital and insisted on being held at all times. Having had a c-section which is major surgery after all I struggled to care for her on my own and was exhausted as I didn't get a moments rest and was not even able to eat my meals till my partner came in the day time and held our baby. When I buzzed for the nurses they came but couldn't get the baby to settle down. And to be fair to them they were short staffed and couldn't be expected to stay with me at all times as they had so many other patients to care for. The second night one of the student midwives took pity on me and held my baby for half an hour around 4.30am so that I could use the toilet, eat my dinner and rest for a bit.

I felt the ward care let the Consultant care down greatly. My discharge home, less than 24 hours post op, seemed inappropriate but as the nursing care in my opinion was lacking, I felt it was better to get home. Attention to detail seemed very poor and personalised holistic care did not happen in my personal experience. Physiotherapy follow-up was confused and it was difficult to get appropriate information about relevant exercises that would have been beneficial to my recovery.

The midwives were kind, caring, knowledgeable and talented. They were incredibly supportive and encouraging. They made us feel confident in their abilities from start to finish and the new MLU was fantastic.

On ward 4 care was lacking in leadership. Nurses were stressed and there was obvious understaffing.

Review of A&E written by a patient
4th July 2017

I went to a and e very reluctantly after a conversation with 111 team. I had an embarrassing problem with non stop bleeding from bowels. The nurse i saw was very kind and reassuring,I really didnt want to be there but had little choice. She made me feel at ease and didnt judge me for leavinthe problem so long. The doctor I saw a Dr JP Byass was also very reassuring and made me feel at ease.He was very kind and understanding and professional. he called for another doctor to come in,he explained what was happening and what they were doing.Could not have had kinder staff. The only problem I had was that I had to wait over 2 and half hours to see the doctor. Too many patients and not enough staff. They do a great job under the circumstances.

Our wonderful midwife Paul was amazing and we are so grateful that he was there to assist the birth of our daughter. We really couldn't have wished for better. The midwife assistant Jade was also absolutely fantastic and was extremely patient as a young person gaining the essential experience needed to carry on providing what seems like faultless levels of care. We were lucky enough to use the new birthing suite and would recommend to anyone who was considering this option. It is worth saying that Paul had advised that they can only allow mothers in a certain risk bracket to use this facility, and I would recommend being open and honest about your circumstances so as to make sure your in the right place for your condition. All in all an amazing birth and thank you to all on the ward for looking after us.

Introduction of Wi-Fi for patients would be fantastic to help pass the waiting times.

Review of Acute Medical Unit written by a family member
20th June 2017

My mother (Mrs Mary Berkin) was brought to HRI A&E on the evening of June 10th after being found at her home unconscious. She did not regain consciousness and died in the early hours of the following morning. I cannot speak too highly of the way both my mother and the family members at her bedside were treated by your medical staff, with especial praise for the staff nurse (whose name I have forgotten). Their approach helped to make a a very sad event bearable.
