The normal surgical admissions lounge was out of action for some reason so the hospital had to improvise. I put on my surgical gown and pressure stockings in an office and was waiting for something to happen when Dr Anita Kovacic came in and was rather surprised to see me there. It turned out that she was the consultant anaesthetist who would be working with Mr Fakouri so she was able to run through the protocol of drugs and my allergies right there. Very friendly and professional. Then I was escorted through a maze of corridors to the operating theatre. I was anaesthetised and that was that - about 90 minutes later I woke up in the recovery ward. Treatment was thoroughly professional and kind - Covid 19 was still a big issue - though I could see that the system was under pressure. The pledge to bring health spending up to average levels across Europe needs to be renewed.
