I have found the reception staff at both Guys and St Thomas’s pleasant and helpful. I was impressed by every interaction I had with my surgeon, Mr Jaiswal. The anaesthetist that spoke to me about the options before my operation listened to my concerns and reassured me about how they would be dealt with. He was as good as his word and I was very pleased I had listened to him and taken his advice. I think it would be helpful if the sequence of events in the surgical lounge could be outlined to the patient or a sheet of information given. The first time I had a hip operation I thought I was going for the operation every time my name was called! The second time I was more relaxed because I remembered that there are many stages to go through before the actual operation. The staff in the recovery room were very kind and encouraging. Once on the ward I felt I was in good hands, very professional nursing and several very warm and kind people. The physiotherapists were most encouraging. The pharmacist was most efficient. The medication I would need on discharge was prepared and locked in my locker drawer the day before I was discharged so on the next day there was no delay. Notification of follow up appointments has been swift. All together a very good experience. The only really unfortunate experience I had was before I got to Guys. My GP referred me to Guys and I asked to be seen by Mr Jaiswal as I had had such a good experience with him and his team before, but I received an appointment at another hospital from an appointment service who insisted that this was what my GP had requested. My GP was adamant that he had referred me to Guys and gave me a copy of the referral. The appointment service would not accept this and I felt completely trapped. Fortunately I had an appointment booked with Mr Jaiswal (follow up from my first hip replacement) and he immediately investigated my second hip and put me on his list. I rang the appointment service to explain that I did not need the appointment they had given me at the other hospital. They then sent me a letter saying that they had had to cancel my appointment and would give me another as soon as possible.....Fortunately I have not had any frustrating dealings like that since I started with the orthopaedics at Guys and St Thomas’s.
