I arrived at the hospital as a result of a motocross accident and so came in via A&E. I felt I was dealt with quickly and the people around me seemed confident, competent and open. Of course the situation was very unpleasant, but I felt as calm as could be expected. After an initial operation that happened within hours of me arriving, I was sent up to this ward, into a sideroom. Again the doctors were attentive and communicated at length with me about a second operation. My injury was very serious, however I felt a suitably experienced surgeon was in charge. His colleagues spoke highly of him and again I felt calm. On the ward (first time I've been an inpatient), I felt very comfortable. I got lots of sleep and felt well cared for. Since I wasn't prepared for my stay, I particularly appreciated 2 Indian nurses who washed my hair for me. After my second operation, 4 days later, I was moved out of my sideroom and into a main ward. I immediately noticed a difference in the 'atmosphere' between the two. The nurses now were more competent and efficient, rather than caring an compassionate. The job still got done though. Things to be improved; MRSA test - I was swabbed for MRSA when I entered the ward, but I was surprised that I wasn't swabbed again when I left. Blood Pressure Machines - Do they have to be so loud, especially when they are used so often during the night? Discharge - On discharge, everything happened so quickly. There was a lot of paperwork & medication I had to take away with me. I did feel a bit rushed in the end and since being home, there might have been other questions I would have asked, had I understood the process better.
