Review of FGH Ward 1 Gynae/Surgery written by a family member
3rd March 2018

I am writing this on behalf of the late Anne Hemsley, for whom I had LPOA for health. I was informed Anne had been admitted on the 29th Dec, as I was on holiday and trying to get information by phone about her state of health was impossible, I was asked about a code which I could not set up under the circumstances. My first visit I found Anne in a chair with a theatre gown and bed jacket on I could smell the stench from her legs as I approached. After three hoursI insisted her legs were redressed and the area around her cleaned up. Before they started dress her legs she was taken to the toilet with the gown gaping open at the back and without protection on her feet, the following day she was taken without dressings and again without foot protection. I complained to the ward sister the following day, she said there were foot overshoes available WHY WERE THEY NOT USED? The consultants name was not on display as it ought to be, I found out who it was so I could speak to her on the phone only to be told she does not do phone consultations, MOST HELPFUL WHEN I AM FIFTY MILES AWAY! Your medical staff said Anne was not at end of life but needed continual nursing care, she was discharged and transported to a nursing home on Feb 14th only to asked on the 16 th by her new doctor if I wanted her to be put back into hospital as she was VERY POORLY. She stayed in the nursing home as the care there was very good, only to DIE on the 20th.SO MUCH FOR NOT BEING AT END OF LIFE. This space is not big enough for me to tell you every detail. would I recommend Furness General THAT IS THE BIGGEST JOKE OF THE YEAR!

I was listened to, and treated in a warm and friendly manner. I felt comfortable and welcome. The doctor and staff were lovely and explained my condition in a way I could understand. Would recommend this hospital always. Thanks

Review of FGH Labour Ward written by a patient
12th February 2018

The new labour ward is fantastic. It’s lovely to be able to stay in one room which was so well equipped. It was also a relief that my husband could stay in the room on a fold down bed. All care I received was brilliant and very efficient. All midwives and doctors were very kind and helpful. It made the experience much less stressful. Thank you so much.

The hospital was very good from what I can see, but parking could be improved, as it took me 25 minutes to find a spot due to the lack of spaces caused by poor and unorganized parking.

From my arrival at A&E, until my discharge, all the staff I came into contact with were both patient and helpful in putting me at ease. In particular, the surgeon, Mr Talawadekar, who performed the operation on my broken right wrist, inserting three k wires into the break, was very thorough in explaining what he was going to do and reassuring me. He was most caring and professional in his attitude to me and his work.

Review of FGH Day Care Unit (Surgery) written by a patient
29th November 2017

I had an operation on the Monday and was not discharged until the Friday but stayed throughout in the Day Care Unit. The care I received was first class and appropriate to my needs during recovery despite some complications. Absolutely no complaints (even though my operation was cancelled at the end of the day when I first attended). In the past 5 years I have had 5 operations of which 2 were in the private sector. There is no comparison and I would choose the NHS every time based on my experience. The pre-op in the private sector is very superficial and if anything goes wrong they are not there to support you. Yet at FGH my every need was promptly addressed and I was kept as comfortable as possible. The staff at all levels were cheerful and supportive. This Unit is a great way of dealing with operations where many patients can be discharged the same day but some can continue to be looked after.
