Review of Emergency Department A&E - Doncaster Royal Infirmary
23rd May 2024

The paramedics who brought me in were very helpful and kind to me and gave me lots of reassurance about coming into the hospital as I was very distressed and didn’t want to go in initially and they said that I would be a couple of hours and speak to someone and then be able to go back home. After arriving at the hospital at just before midnight 21/05/24 I was told there was a quite room I could be sat in while I waited however in the time between getting out of the ambulance and into the hospital I was then informed that it would no longer be possible for me to be in a quiet room and to sit in the main waiting room. Around 2 and a half hours after arriving I had a member of staff ask for my name so they could check what was happening as they said I had been waiting a long time and then just after 3am 22/05/24 I was called to have my blood pressure and oxygen levels checked. The member of staff asked me when I was having these checked why I was in A&E because they didn’t have any notes or very little notes on why I was there despite being brought in by paramedics because of mental health. After having my blood pressure checked just after 3 am I was told to return to the main waiting area and then I was left waiting there again for another 3 hours where at 6am I was then called to have my blood pressure checked again. After having my blood pressure checked for the second time and now being in A&E for over 6 hours I was apologised to for the wait and sent back to the main waiting room again. 2 hours later at 8am after there had then been a whole staff change over from the night shift I was called to be taken to a different waiting area. This waiting area was extremely cold and I had been in the main waiting room all night without wearing a jacket yet in this new waiting area I was placed in I had to wear my coat as well and still had goose bumps and was extremely cold. Most patients in this room had blankets and pillows however this was not something that had been offered or mentioned to me. At this point it was just past 8 am and I had not been told anything that was happening, all I was told that I had to sit in a new waiting room. I was then in this new waiting room for around 15 minutes before a member of staff came and called me again. I cannot remember this lady’s name but she was incredibly nice to me and explained to me that I shouldn’t have been left for as long as I had been and that I had been forgotten about and took me to a private room and spoke to me. I was struggling by this point to be able to talk exactly about how I was feeling as I was so exhausted from being sat up all night and without any food in addition to exhaustion I was feeling from the emotional distress I had been brought into the hospital because of. I am extremely disappointed that I was left sat for over 8 hours after being brought into A&E without being told anything that was going on or happening to me to then be and then being informed that I shouldn’t have ever waited that long and I was forgotten about especially with the added anxiety I had about visiting the hospital and being there for a very long time and being reassured that it would probably take a few hours that I was prepared for yet by the time I left A&E I had been there almost 9 hours. In addition to this my next of kin was under the impression that while I was in hospital I would be having a mental health assessment however I was just spoken to about the potential of talking therapies and given a leaflet with phone numbers in however she was as I stated earlier in this very kind to me and did explain to me what was happening and what had been happening and I was very grateful for her and a rating of very poor is not a reflection on her or the paramedics who brought me in. I was just extremely disappointed with learning that the reason for my extremely long wait was due to being forgotten about as well as then feeling unwell due to being exhausted and very hungry as I hadn’t eaten due to the time that an ambulance had been called for me.

Suggested improvements
Informing what is happening if there are extremely long wait times and also making sure that patients who have been brought in don’t just get forgotten about.

The department was running late which I expected with an afternoon appointment but the staff informed me of this fact. I was given an option to wait or to rearrange for another time.

Suggested improvements
I think the staff are doing everything they can for patients so no change really

Obviously I understand the pressures of the service as I work at the trust. My concerns were: the seating was taken up with more relatives than patients, I had to stand for some of the 4 hours I waited when I had ? Head injury. Shouldn't there be designated patient only seats? I wasn't offered any pain relief when I was clearly in a great deal of pain. I wasn't given a diagnosis and I have since been very ill following my head injury. I realise there was safety netting advice, but due to my ED experience I am not in a rush to repeat that.

Suggested improvements
Designated patient only seats Regular updates in regards to waiting times I was scared to go to the toilet for fear of missing my name being called and losing my hard fought for chair Pain relief

Sophie my nurse was superb in explaining my procedure and answering all my questions. We had a good chat and her lovely personality and humour made me feel informed, relaxed and at ease with what was happening. Dr wood was equally as professional and friendly with a lovely demeanour and clear explanation of what she was going to do. The live TV monitor helped as I watched my procedure and could understand and see what was happening, quite mesmerising really lol

After a poor experience with my gp i found the staff and doctors at dri very helpful and put my mi d at rest after my xray about the reality of my injuries , the only problem i had was the volume of people waiting and the time i had to wait to be seen i itially of 2.5 hours .

Suggested improvements
