I was booked in for 6.30p.m. as soon as l got there l was told it was very busy and the time designated me would certainly over run. I was given an immediate apology and sat to wait. I could see there was a lot of people before me so decided to wait. After many apologies l was seen at 8.15 and the nurse was excellent. I went with a bad chest complaint which l realised required more than aspirin. It looked to me like a long night for the staff who were remained positive throughout. The nurse treated me as though l were her 1st patient yet l had already been there near 2 hours and it looked like another 2 awaited her. Granted from a selfish point of view l was expecting to be see within 30 mins yet as the night dragged on the staff were great and showed no sign of tension other than be apologetic about something (huge backlog) that was not their fault. I cheekily asked the nurse she must be on at least double time. She just smiled and said "no". She continued with a thoroughness that l did not expect, with a gentleness the pressures deemed too much to allow yet she was treating me as though l were the only one there? I cannot understand that type of commitment that dedication and concern for the individual but l experienced it that evening. What Choc could do is have more nurses available. Triage as patients come in with most serious going to docs. Have a rota where if it looks like a busy night have at least 4 extra to cover a 4 or 6 hour period. For goodness sake pay them at least double time... better still for that out of hours service 2.5 times. This would indicate in some way how much you really value them rather than just use this genuine commitment to people as taken for granted. Genuinelyvin awe of there treatment to me and all the rest but pretty appalled that their pay does not reflect this nightly heroism.
