Review of Hospital at Home
23rd February 2023

I’ve been treated by a dozen or so different Hospital at Home Nurses/Paramedics and trainees and without exception they’ve all been exemplary with their professional care. They’ve been so friendly and so very courteous at all times. This Hospital at Home service is first class and has saved me from having to be an inpatient in hospital and saved me from exhausting lengthy daily visits to be treated at Hospital.

Suggested improvements
Nothing could be improved as the service given is exceptional.

Review of Respiratory & Home Oxygen Service
23rd February 2023

I am writing this on behalf of my husband, Basil Markesinis as he is incapable of doing so himself due to his illness. He is suffering from advanced vascular Parkinsonism. The latest form this has taken is an inability to swallow and at the same time an inability to cough up mucus/secretions. This resulted in an extremely distressing state where he was coughing incessantly and violently and it must have been very frightening for him, with this immovable plug of mucus blocking his throat. There was no sign of infection in the lungs, as verified by district nurses and paramedics but the mucus in his throat was infected and an antibiotic prescribed - to which he responded well but the mucus remained and was still causing distress. I tried without success to get someone to suction him at home: I was told that this was not done and he would have to go into hospital, which was the last thing he or I wanted. Eventually I found, almost by accident, Chris Swindale. After an assessment by the district nurse he sprang into action, ordering a pump and accessories which were delivered the same day and he himself came round that afternoon to train me and Basil’s carer. He couldn’t have been more efficient or kinder and his action has been a total game-changer. We have been able to keep the build-up of mucus under control and have had not further distressing episodes. I cannot rate him highly enough.

I feel you could make GP’s surgeries and other medical professionals more aware that this service exists so action can be taken much earlier. It took at least a week of asking and searching and generally chasing suggestions before I found this service. I believe that contact was made by a district nurse with the respiratory team at the beginning of the week but I heard nothing from them until I rang them myself directly. This was on the prompting of a member of an ambulance crew who were called out by the surgery. He said that he agreed with me, that all my husband need was suctioning, which he did, and my husband was immediately relieved. He spent some time with us, speaking to the surgery and advising me, giving me the direct number of the respiratory team. I am extremely grateful to him too.
