Where my answers are less than perfect, it was for one reason only. One of the nurses informed me that the hospital would normally tell patients who are taking blood pressure reducing medication to come off the medication one day before the procedure. The reason given was that, in the opinion of the nurse, blood pressure drops on administering the anaesthetic and, if the initial BP was too low, patients “may not wake up”. This comment put me at considerable distress as I had not been told to stop taking this medication. My surgeon informed me that the comment was baseless and I calmed down. In general, I think nurses should not comment outside their medical expertise and avoid causing psychological distress for patients. This was the only experience of this nature. All other staff, with no exception (reception, nurses, pharmacist, physio, doctors) were fantastic in all respects.

Well explained medical advice / use of visual aids and photos of the operation / patience in answering question / “fluid” intelligence in understanding the gist of my questions, which were normally not couched in proper medical nomenclature (I have no medical training) / nice touch to stick his head in the recovery room and say that the op had been successful (I guess he knew I was being nervous prior to the procedure).

Kash Akhtar, my surgeon My anaesthetist The nurses in the recovery room for their easy conversational attitude, helping me to come out of anaesthesia.
