The ward toilet in bay was busy with other patient. Have bowel disease and when I need it, I need it. Went to nurse station and asked in desperation where another toilet was, they said they didn’t have one. I explained my desperation and showed my cancer toilet, urgent card and she said I couldn’t use any others because they were either women’s bays or private rooms. She told me I should use a commode, however, she never got up to get me one and carried on sitting at the station. I ran out of the ward, down the corridor, down the steps and into the public toilet at the entrance - sadly, I never made it in time. I was in hospital for pneumonia and breathing difficulty and that run nearly finished me off. When I arrived back a on the ward. I told her how unhelpful and insensitive I thought she was. Her response, “ if you talk to me like that I will call security and have you removed” . The following night I wanted to get the attention of a nurse as my iv cannula was red hot, hard and sore so I asked the nurse doing the drug round what her name was so that I knew who I was asking for - she said ‘ I have already told you”. I said I can’t hear very well as I have poor hearing her reply “well, you were not listening then”. She then walked off without telling me her name. She never did look at the cannula or change it. Antibiotics were never given on time, buzzers were left buzzing in the early hours of the morning. Pain medications were given late to other sick patients. They just left people in pain and distressed. The strange thing was the sister on that night barely moved from the nurses station. An eye opener and utterly shocking and I’ve never felt so vulnerable and unsafe in my entire life. On a positive note the doctors were great, sensitive and explained things clearly.
