7th May 2021

I was treated very well by the staff member who onboarded me (Bianca OKERE). OKERE showed me around the ward, told me which rooms where available for which (Sporting/leisure) activities and generally made sure to answer all of my questions whilst I've been on this ward so far. I was also treated well by other members of staff including my key nurse Jenny (I was not able to recall the surnames of all members of staff unforntunately), Steven, Mark, Hannah, Innocent, Amy and of course the occupational therapists - Vicky and Steph.

Suggested improvements
Whilst some members of staff have been fantastic in communicating with me and reading body and facial language and knowing when to probe and when to perhaps avoid an unhelpful line of questioning and when to keep their distance, I felt some members of staff could have done this better. For example, the other night (Wednesday 5th May 2021, between 9pm and 10pm) whilst I was getting my jab, Michael was asking some questions I was uncomfortable with. I tried deflecting by changing the subject but he kept asking personal questions about my ethnicity and background like "where are you originally from" and, when I wouldn't respond, Michael began saying things like "you know what I mean". Eventually when he made me feel like I had to tell him my personal information and I especially didn't want to upset him as he was handling my medication, I answered his questions. It made me feel like I was not allowed to keep my information private and that I had no choice about this. Later on, yesterday evening (Thursday 6th May 2021, between 18:00 and 21:00) after a pool/snooker game with one of the other patients (Jerome), One of the other patients (I don't know his name) started saying things to me he could only know if he had been told something about me. What happened was that as the pool game ended (I won) Jerome headed out for a cigarette break I tried to encourage him to quit smoking by keeping him playing pool/snooker. Jerome left eventually but then the old man (whose name still escapes me) muttered, "you better keep your depression to yourself". I had never shared that information with anyone in cove ward before so I have no idea how the old man got to find that out. I feel as if my personal, private information isn't being properly protected.

Response from Berrywood Hospital

Thank you for taking time to provide this feedback. The staff will pleased to hear your positive feedback. I am sorry that you feel that your personal private information was not properly protected. We take confidentiality very seriously and all staff undergo annual training relating to this. All staff are aware not to share information about individuals with other patients. All staff are also trained and expected to engage with patients and develop rapport with them, one of the key ways we do this is by getting to know them, asking questions. I am sorry that you felt that you were pressured into sharing information you did not want to. This will be discussed during supervision with staff individually and during group training days.
