I am a recovering Alcoholic with 16.5 years ongoing sobriety. I am open about this and shared that information with everyone I saw from my first appointment to the day of my operation. I had a long conversation about it with the nurse who booked me in and the anesthetist before my surgery. However I was assured that all the drugs I would receive would be fine and not caused me any problems. However, this was not in fact the case. after leaving Hospital I spoke to the medications people, number on a piece of paper given by the discharge nurse at Ashford. At her suggestion I stopped ALL the painkillers and then had 12 days (and nights) of the most awful withdrawal symptoms I have ever experienced. Luckily, I did not start drinking to alleviate the symptoms but discussed it with my GP and practice nurse plus several people from A A. This should not have happened and I should have been told that, with my history, there was a chance it would, so I could prepare myself and my husband for it, or I could have been given the option of non-addictive drugs.
